Hey. I run my news and reviews site and it’s been going pretty good for a while. In fact, I’ve been using the Gamepress theme since December and I love it. It’s perfect for what I’m trying to do. But now, I have encountered my first problem.

I woke up today and saw there was an update for the Gamepress theme. So I clicked the update button. I was then given the following message in my Dashboard home:

“ERROR: The themes directory is either empty or doesn’t exist. Please check your installation.”

I then tried to go to my site and all I got was a blank white page. I tried going to my site on multiple computers, phones, and browsers to make sure it truly wasn’t working. Also, on Google Chrome where the tabs are at, the official title of my site is usually displayed, but now it just says the URL.

Another note in a yellow box at the top of my Dashboard reads:

“An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.”

Please attempt the update again now is a link, so I click on it and it says everything is up to date. I then went to Appearance < Themes and saw that my site went back to the WP Default theme, Twenty Twelve, and then said below that:

“Broken Themes – The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

    Name Description
    gamepress Stylesheet is missing.”

This is urgent. Please help me as soon as possible. Thank You.

    My site is https://retrospectrealm.com/

  • If your site reverted to Twenty Twelve, delete GamePress theme (I hope that you didn’t make changes to theme files, or if you did you have a backup), and then install a fresh copy – either from admin dashboard or upload newest version via FTP. And don’t worry, you’ll not loose theme settings.

So I should go into my FTP Files for my site, go into WP Content > Themes and just delete the whole Gamepress file? Then upload a fresh one using FileZilla?

Sorry if I sound stupid, just trying to make sure before doing anything.

You can also delete a theme from your dashboard, or via FTP if you prefer. You might want to make a copy of this folder on your computer first (unless you have a backup, which you should). Then just delete GamePress theme and install latest version and activate.
BTW you said that you have Twenty Twelve activated but when I go to your website it’s blank.

There is no option to delete Gamepress in my Appearance > Themes. It tells me Twenty Twelve is my current them, but my site is blank, as I said in my original post.

    See for yourself: https://prntscr.com/xeixu

There’s something wrong with your Twenty Twelve theme – there is no screenshot and it says it by Anonymous, when it should say: By the WordPress team, there’s no version info… where did you get this theme? I’d start with downloading Twenty Twelve from WP repository, uploading it via FTP and activating. And only when your site works properly with default theme attempt what I recommended earlier.

You might also run google search for “Themes must have a stylesheet and a template” – seems like many people had this problem with different themes and plugins. Right now it’s very late for me, so I will check back here in a couple of hours, but I hope everything goes well! Good luck!

Thanks so much! It’s all resolved now.

I uploaded the Twenty Twelve to my site with FileZilla and my site finally appeared with the Twenty Twelve theme. I then deleted the Gamepress broken theme from my FTP Files and uploaded a new fresh file of Gamepress and now it all works fine.

I still get the “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.” yellow message at the top of my Dashboard, but everything seems to be fine.

I also noticed that my site has been somewhat slow lately. Browsing the internet I found that lots of other who use the Gamepress theme run slow too. I thought I’d let you know that, Alex.

Thanks again though. You’re a life saver!

I’m glad it all worked out! For the update message I found a thread which should help you resolve this. As for speed, GamePress is a work in progress and I will be looking into it soon.

    Cheers!
