Woke up today and our site has reverted to the preset theme.

The site has been live with our custom developed theme for years now without any issues. We did not make any changes to the Theme or make any updates, it seems to have reverted randomly. The theme files are still in the FTP, but our custom no longer appears as an option in the Theme manager section. Only the original “Twenty Eleven” default appears.

Does anyone know why this might be happening? And what is the fix? Preferably a quick one (even if a bit messy) as the current site is essentially “down” now.

    Thanks.

  • Sounds like your theme must have some kind of problem – really no way for anyone here to be able to guess what. Might be due to something changing on the server or the site being hacked (old versions of WP are insecure) – have you looked at whether any files were changed?

    Thanks for the reply.

It’s now resolved. For some reason duplicate versions of the theme were created in a backup folder. I’m told that since WordPress is programmed to ignore files with the same metadata, it reverted to the default.

We’ve moved the backup files to a different location, which seemed to work.

Glad to hear that, but you absolutely should get that site updated – so that it doesn’t get hacked. At this point, you will have to do a series of manual updates –

And a custom theme may or may not work, so you might want to start looking at a new theme if necessary.

Completely agree. We’re in the process of updating/redesigning the entire site.

    Thanks!

Awesome :)! Good luck with it.
