Theme install permissions and image upload permissions?

  • Hi Folks,
    Newbie questions here. I’m trying to using the Dashboard to install themes from WP and I get to the place where it says:
    Host, Username and Password, And I used my master hosting login for the ftp, but the upload gets about 95% and stalls. Am I supposed to use me WP user admin and password? I assume the host is just the url for the website and not the /usr/home/username/folder path?

    Also, I was able to upload new images to a new library, but in order to do that I had to create the upload folder and then chmod to 777. Not sure that is safe? Is there another way that is recommended?

    Well, I see that a theme install worked partially, but it took FOREVER. Not all the files were uploaded using the dashboard approach. Bummer.
