Theme n00b looking to mod default theme

    I signed up for a domain and hosting through Bluehost in order to start my blog. I need to design a very clean and simple theme that is closely related to the default theme. Here is a simple layout that is the goal:

    I can design things in illustrator/indesign/photoshop but I don’t know the slightest bit of CSS/HTML/whatever. what’s a good/quick way to start?
