Theme option vs custom meta box

    What is the difference between Theme options and meta boxes?
    I know meta boxes mean custom option fields for custom posts. For example i can create social media tabs(fb, twitter, yt etc) using custom fields and meta boxes , i can also create the same thing using theme options. similarly if i can give all custom options to the client using theme options, what is the use of custom fields and meta boxes?
    I would like to know generally which things should be done with theme options and which ones using meta boxes?

    Theme options are for global settings that don’t need to be changed often while meta boxes are for per post settings.
