• Here is something that I’ve been wondering about. If you heavily modify a theme can you then rename it and claim it has a new design of which you are the author? Or, does it remain a derivative of the original theme? I mean I would think that there would have to come a point when the design becomes your own. Otherwise all of the themes built upon the default design would have to be named as such and those creators wouldn’t be able to claim a credit

  • if you think its a derivative, it probably is. Personally, for me — this is a common sense issue, sort of like the argument for what is pornography..

Well, that didn’t really answer the question at all.

There isnt a rule. Im merely saying that when in doubt, I tend to use my common sense.

If I’ve modified a design heavily but it is still recognisable as being derivative of the original theme, I usually credit the original author in the Description section or as a comment in style.css. This, of course, assumes that the original theme was released under GPL.
