[Theme: Travel Blogger] Adding a slider or featured image to home page

I want to add a slider to my home page – Ideally being able to “feature post” on home page – however I ticked this option on the top right of the edit post admin panel and it didn’t work (Featured posts only seem to work for categories , not static pages)

Then I tried to edit the size of my header thinking I could insert the slider into the header but I couldn’t figure out how to change the height of the header box.

Is there a way to feature a post on my home page or put a featured image on the home page – (in the transparent background box that displays on category pages when you feature a post) ?
