• I am new to WordPress, css, etc, and am having difficulty change the background color of the widget area in the footer to #689C48. I was able to change the background color of the footer itself, but I am struggling to figure out how to change background color of the footer widget area. At this point it is a horrible green and I’m not sure how that happened.

    I am making my changes in my child theme.

    Here is a link to my site to see my problem: https://66.147.244.111/~amazoni7/

    I have searched the forums, but can’t seem to find the right solution. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Debbie

    .widget-area {
    	background-color: #689C48;
    }

    at the very end of style.css of the parent theme, you have this:

    #colophon {
    clear: both;
    background-color: #89FF00

    it does not belong there – remove it – this should solve the color problem…

    if youwasnt to change the color, put a similar style into style.css of the child theme (and make sure to close the bracket }

    @mytaxsite.co.uk – thanks that did change the background of the widget area, but did not solve my problem completely, I am still missing something. The background behind the widget area is still that terrible green. https://66.147.244.111/~amazoni7/

    @alchymyth – thanks, but how do I get into the parent style.css now that I am using my child theme? I tried including the code you provided in my child theme, replacing the background-color: #89FF00; with my color #689C48 and nothing changed.

    My apologies, I am learning, but I an so new at this and it can be so confusing!

    I appreciate you responses and help. Thanks.

    how do I get into the parent style.css now that I am using my child theme?

    dshboard – appearance – editor: then select the parent theme ‘Twenty Eleven’ from the ‘Select theme to edit:’ dropdown list at the top right; then select Stylesheet (style.css) from the list on the right.

    Alchmyth – thanks, I found it and removed the code you recommended, however, I still have the awful green showing. I will look around some more to see if I can figure out why this is happening. I managed to get the widget areas the right color, but the background is still that funky green.

    I appreciate your assistance. Knowing where to look at the code is very helpful. I’ve been trying to use firebug also, but I’m not sure I am understanding everything completely.

    I appreciate the assistance, you can spend sooo much time researching!!

    Hi, I just noticed that when I changed the color widget area background, it also changes in the sidebar. I want the background of the sidebar widget area to remain white and the footer area to be green. Is this possible to do?

    Here you go — change the background-color (or add it) to these CSS sections:

    #supplementary {
        background-color: #689C48;
        border-top: 1px solid #DDDDDD;
        overflow: hidden;
        padding: 1.625em 7.6%;
    }

    #site-generator {
        background-color: #689C48;
        border-top: 1px solid #DDDDDD;
        color: #666666;
        font-size: 12px;
        line-height: 2.2em;
        padding: 2.2em 0.5em;
        text-align: center;
    }

    To answer your more recent post which I had not seen, yes, you can do that by adding the footer div id to the widget-area CSS:

    #colophon.widget-area {
    	background-color: #689C48;
    }

    Then you might also need to put in a similar CSS for the other widget areas to stay white — though they “should” go back to being white if the above works as intended.

    I repeat my suggestion:

    remove this:

    #colophon {
    clear: both;
    background-color: #89FF00

    from the end of style.css of the parent theme Twenty Eleven.

    it does not belong there; it should never been added there; it is purely wrong there.

    end of green footer (full stop).

    Thank you so much for all of the suggestions. After some trial and error I finally was able to make the changes I had asked about above. Thanks for all of your help!
