[Theme: Twenty Eleven] Twenty eleven footer displaying weirdly IE9

I am using a child theme for twenty eleven. My site is displaying right in Firefox but in IE9 the footer is all squashed up. Anyone give me a clue as to why this is happening? If I click on compatability view it fixes it but not everyone will do this.
