I just tried updating my theme in WordPress (“Suffusion”) as I just discovered my version was wildly out of date. I used the built-in WordPress updater in “Themes” but when I clicked “Update automatically” it gave me some message that the update failed because it couldn’t remove the old theme.

It added a “.maintenance” file that disabled the site. Once I removed that, I found the old theme seems to be gone with no new theme to replace it and the site is still down (it’s https://www.covermesongs.com). My hunch is that the error happened on WordPress’s end rather than Suffusion’s, but I could be wrong.

I had made a million CSS modifications to the theme, as well as tweaked a ton of settings. Is there any way to get my previous setup back via WordPress (or do I need to have my host restore the entire site from a backup?)

What went wrong with the theme upgrade, and how can I successfully upgrade my theme once I’ve got it reinstalled?

Thanks so much! Would really appreciate any help, frustrating how one trying to update one thing can just totally wipe out your site when it messes up.

Hopefully you made your css modifications in a child-theme, otherwise when you updated you lost those modifications. You should go to your site by ftp or your host’s file manager. Save a copy of your style.css and functions.php (if you modified it) to your computer. Then you can delete your theme and upload a fresh copy (unzip it on your computer then upload).
Yes if your host has a backup copy, you can restore it then go from there.

Deleting or renameing your theme by FTP should make your site load with a default theme.

Thanks questas, that’s really helpful. I’m trying to delete the theme though via FTP so I can reinstall and WordPress isn’t letting me. It keeps putting the folder (which only has two files in it) right back into wp-contents after I delete it.

In the “Themes” menu in WordPress the theme appears under “Broken Themes.” Hitting the delete link there doesn’t work either, it just reappears.

Something buggy going on, do you or anyone know how I can actually delete it? WordPress won’t let me reinstall until it thinks it’s gone.
