• Hi,

I have been using the Market Theme for over a year now and I have had no issues with Theme Updates.

A Child Theme was previously created to save the slight changes I made in terms of colour etc. Although, looking at my child theme now – I believe I did this incorrectly in the beginning as I seem to have copied the entire parent ‘style.css’ into the child ‘style.css’ which I now understand is incorrect.

Currently, I am using Version 1.0.0.8 of the Market Theme. Last week, I noticed there was a Theme Update available (Version 2.0.1.2). Therefore, I proceeded to update the theme to avoid security risks in the future.

Unfortunately, the Theme Update had a negative effect on my site. I had an image placed in the header which was removed, posting comments became available for users on every page, the booking form which exists within an ‘Enhanced Text’ widget (includes PHP, JavaScript and HTML code) stopped functioning and there was a menu at the very top of the page listing all the pages of my site – including for example; the Booking Confirmation page which should not be available unless the user makes a booking. The menu at the top is not required for my site.

After noticing the issues, I quickly restored the site from a backup and completed the other plugin and WP updates as necessary. But, I still have the ‘Theme Update’ available and I am not sure how to proceed.

If anyone could advise me on how I can move forward with the update, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Regards,
    Sarah

Do you mean this Market theme?

    Edit:
Yes, I see that you do mean that theme. Can you please post in that author’s dedicated support sub-forum instead?

That may be the best way to answer your question about going from that 1.0.0.8 version to something newer.

    Hi Jan,

    Thank you for your reply.

I did not realise there was a sub-forum dedicated to the Market Theme. I have posted my question within the sub-forum as you suggested.

    Hi,

I have not yet received a reply to my question which was posted in the sub-forum dedicated to the Market Theme.

While I am waiting for a response, I wonder if anyone could help me get a better understanding of Theme Updates and Child Themes.

    1. I thought that by creating a Child Theme and activating it on my WP site, any update to the Parent Theme could not effect the Child Theme. Is this completely incorrect? Looking back, I think I set up the Child Theme incorrectly anyway as it looks like I copied the entire ‘style.css’ from the parent theme to the child theme. Please advise.

    2. If the design of the parent theme is changed, for example; a new menu bar has been added at the top of each page in this case. Is there anyway of avoiding this change being added to the child theme?

Apologies in advance for my lack of understanding regarding WP Themes.

    Thanks,
    Sarah

    Mostly correct. ??

Using a child theme will work most of the time for CSS changes and modifying actions and filters in a theme. But if the parent theme is changed enough then those modifications in the child theme may no longer work.

Is there anyway of avoiding this change being added to the child theme?

    Not really. ??

You really use a child theme to make sure your changes are not lost. With minor parent updates occur then it usually does not effect the child theme. So when a them goes from version 1.0 to 1.1 (just an example) the child theme rarely breaks.

But when the theme goes from 1.x to 2.x and there are many fundamental changes to the parent theme then your child theme may break.

    Hi Jan,

That is very helpful – thank you.

Currently, I have a child theme which contains a complete copy of the parent ‘style.css’. After some investigation, I understand that this is incorrect. Do you think this could be causing issues for the theme update as well? I am not sure as to whether I should update the child theme ‘style.css’ to exclude the additional CSS from the parent.

What are the implications of not updating the theme?

It looks like my only options are to not update the theme or do the update and adapt to the new changes on the theme. ??

    Thanks,
    Sarah
