Theme wont display a read more link on category page

and after <?php the_excerpt(); in archives.php added:
new_excerpt_more($more);

no need, please remove that again.

your coding should be ok;
however, if you are using hand-written excerpts, the ‘read-more’ will not show.
it only shows for automatically generated excerpts if the content is shorter than the excerpt limit (default 55 words).

if you want a ‘read-more’ at all times, you might better retry your first attempt, and add:

<p><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>">Read more</a></p>
