• Hey, everyone. I could be wrong but it seems to me that most themes provide different facades via CSS, but as far as the logic of presenting chronological blog entries is concerned, they reinvent the wheel over and over. How many ways are there? The WP Loop seems to be the same no matter what. You can make more radical changes with CSS. Is that why we now have child themes?

  • The loop can be so varied it’s amazing. Many themes are different version of the same beast. BUt many break out of this and do complex and amazing things.

In a nutshell, the loop, and all the php do the complex work. The css is the facade, skin style, etc.

Child themes, are simply a safe way for you to modify a theme.

If you take a theme, and modify the code, when that theme gets updgraded to add new features, bugfixes, security fixes, etc, the original theme gets overwritten. Any modificat8ions you make to the theme get lost.

If you make a child theme, it’s a safe way to make your modifications outside of the parent theme, so your changes remain safe.

Thanks, Rev. Voodoo. I guess I haven’t seen much variation in loops, but I am pretty new to WordPress. I’ll keep my eyes open for themes that do more than the basic listing of posts. If you know if any, let me know. ??
