In the past two months, I have had two installations of WordPress automatically update the themes. The two installations use different themes (one is Zeemagazine – other is Swift Basic).

This was done totally automatically. No one was logged into either installation during the time the update occurred.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? How can I stop it from happening again? I lose all of my theme updates when this occurs.

  • It can be by your host. Some hosts now either notify you to update software or do it by themselves as part of their efforts to ward off Brute Force attacks. Have you contacted your hosts about this?

Some hosting companies may do that – as a security measure. Where is your site hosted.

You should not be making changes to theme files – using a Child Theme is the solution to this problem.

I am with Hostmonster. The theme is now solved because I created “child themes”.

But it also updated some of my plugins – which also created a problem.

WordPress itself does not automatically update anything. So you’ll need to check with Hostmonster about any updating that happened automatically. Or is there anyone else who has access to your site?

Okay – think I got to the bottom of what occurred. Spoke with Hostmonster. On April 29th – they automatically updated the Super Cache plugin. They maintain that that is all that they updated. However, on all of the WP installations that I have with Super Cache installed, all the other plugins and themes were updated. The installations w/o Super Cache did not experience any updating.
