    I had a lot of trouble installing word press on a web host which did not already have it there. Once I finally got it installed (didn’t install user properly in C-panel) the themes were not showing. No matter what theme I selected, I got an unformatted page AND trying to pull up websitename.com/wp-content/themes gave a 404 error.

    After looking around this site a long time, I found this page:

    Way down near the bottom is a list of RESOURCES. This one saved the day:

    The root of my problems was unzipping the wordpress files on my computer and then ftp-ing them to the server. Instead, the video shows how to properly set up the database and user in C-panel AND upload the zipped file to your sever and unzip/extract it there.

    Deleted all files from the server, retaining my wp-config.php file. After the files were extracted, I uploaded the wp-config.php file. Using this method made all the files extract with the proper permission codes. Themes are loading … and all is well in my world.
