• I keep seeing this topic and seeing that it is closed – yet the problem persists. I have this on every website where I updated to the latest version of WordPress.

Happens when I try to change the user email address in the Users profile via the Dashboard. No message anywhere – in spam, trash, filter – not in new email I’m trying to change to nor old email I’m trying to change from. It is NOT my hosting server. I have SMTP set up.

I know this is a volunteer world, but it would seem that the practical thing to suggest to people is to back out to version 4.x . I can, of course, go into all of my clients’ databases and make the suggested changes (I’m hoping one of those solutions work.)

Please don’t close this again without some kind of practical answer.

Thanks for all you do – but please help

  • Hello, billsall54, & welcome. I apologize–I’m really not understanding what the problem is. I’m certainly not seeing anything amiss on the website itself. Exactly, please–what message are you seeing & precisely where on the site are you seeing it?

Please tell us in detail what steps you use to reproduce the problem. Again, I apologize & appreciate your patience as we attempt to help you sort this out.

Hello Jackie, I’ve done even more research and the problem is more difficult than I first understood. I have 20+ wordpress sites all running on A2 hosting. To date, A2 has provided excellent support and I’ve not run into any problems. At a quick glance, I found 4 sites which had been updated to WordPress 4.9.8. Two use the twentyfourteen based theme, one uses Sparkling based theme and one uses Accelerate based theme.

Since I was unable to update the email for the user with Administrator permission via the User Profile in the dashboard – I get the “There is a pending change of your email to …” message. I checked old email, new email, trash, spam – nothing. I have WP-SMTP installed and it works. (this is why I wrote the original problem ticket).

I decided to post a help ticket to my hosting service and to as many WordPress places I could find to try to get help.

I also decided that I would try to simply modify the email/password within the php database. Much to my surprise, the WP_Users and WP_Usermeta tables were missing in 3 of the 4 examples I provided above. I wish I could blame plugins, but I have one site with the same theme and plugins as 2 that are NOT working – the one that is working is using WP Version 4.8.7 and having no trouble.

I am at a total loss and don’t know how to proceed. The websites with 4.9.8 are:
napavalleyhairstylist.com (based on Accelerate theme) – missing tables,
chrismarksdance.com (based on Sparkling theme) – working,
sonomacountyacts.com (based on TwentyFourteen theme) – missing tables/ not able to access dashboard admin
slasystemstest.com (based on TwentyFourteen theme) – missing tables/not able to access dashboard as admin

The slasystemstest and sonomacountyacts websites are the same structure/theme as womensmarchnapavalleyaction.org – which has WP 4.8.7 and has no problems.

    HELP!!

Hello, billsall54. A few things come to mind here, but, not being able to see everything directly, I am obviously at a serious disadvantage, as I hope you can understand. The first concern I have is whether or not perhaps your hosting space is being exceeded. You should check w/your provider regarding this. Akin to that is whether your database(s) have become too large. I have seen hosting providers cut off sites for this reason.

Barring those things, one needs to look at the possibility of corrupted database(s). If your provider’s control panel has the facility for it, you can use it to run a database check & repair, though I would advise backing up the database(s) first, even if they are messed up.

The other thing you should check on those sites where you can’t log into the dashboard is whether or not there may be a security plugin preventing the login, & you should check .htaccess files as well. I’ve seen these types of problems cause this, though having thus said, if database tables are missing–then, yeah–there may indeed be a problem logging in! You are welcome to paste your .htaccess file in your next reply, but please enclose it in , ie,
    line 1
    line 2
    line 3`

This also raises the spectre of a multiple site–or perhaps even a server-wide–compromise, though I rather think the database size/corruption guess may be the most plausible.
