There is still no answer as to why this exists

You, WordPress, did a good job rising above Joomla and Drupal. You’re not perfect, but your primary market advantage was: THE PUBLIC was becoming more and more trained to use your CMS. And that is the key. Some software just sucks, but if you can train people to use it, then you win. So you spent over a decade winning market share from (arguably better in some ways) other php CMS projects. You figured out how to monetize your work. You provided a platform that more, and more, and more of the public was getting used to using. Then you jumped the shark.
Does Facebook change their UI? Google does, and people hate them for it. Does Twitter launch crap tools that no one at all in the world asked for except whoever was in that first Gutenberg meeting? Who sold you on this? Was it the guy from Fyre?
Make the classic editor standard. This thing is way too complicated for the user/customer you worked so hard to acquire.
