Thinking About Starting Blogging with WordPress

  • I am thinking of starting my own blog site with WordPress, as well as using an hemmingway (interface) and with, dreamhost. I am not really sure how to go about it. I know someone can instal it for me, and all. I have a few questions that I’d be more than happy for anyone to answer for me.
    1. Do i need to have mysql installed on my system, and if i do, which version, and also, can MS SQL server 2005 work?

  • What do you mean by “mysql installed on my system”? Your own computer?
    If you mean your computer, then the answer is no, you don’t need anything on your computer. Maybe a FTP client.
    All the required software should be on the host server.

    rudolf45 is correct. However, if you plan on running WordPress on your own computer then you’ll need a few things. WP requires a database and server to function. Personally, I run 3 instances of WordPress locally – 2 of them WP 2.3.3 (1 for trouble shooting and the other for an offline backup of my real blog) while the 3rd instance is WP 2.5 which I keep current via SVN. I run XAMPP which will install Apache web server and MySQL on your PC with complete access via phpMyAdmin.

    Well, I thought it would be too much for a novice to get into the locally installed WP.

    Hi – I think I’ve got a similar querey. I’m a bit confused by hosting.

    I’m looking to start bloging with Word Press (well I’m going to help a friend to do it) but we’d ideally like to put it on a page of our current website.

    So we’ve already got a host for the website – will this work as the host for WP too? I’ve read that the host needed to have certain requirements so would I need to find out if they’re all covered (right?)

    Are there any problems / pitfalls that I should watch out for?

    For example – would it matter that the website is more that just a blog website and has other types of content on it?

    It doesn’t really work by “putting on a page” in an existing website.
    What you should do: install it in a subfolder, like
    example.com/blog (or replace “blog” with whatever the subfolder will be named).

    Yeah that’s great. Would make sense to have it in a subfolder – i don’t know much about the website at the moment as I’m due to take it over soon, but should be simple enough.

    Just need to try it out I suppose!

    One more thing – in the future we’re thinking of maybe moving to a content management system, is it easy enough to move it over if this happens?
