Just a small rant and the expression of a concern regarding the future of Worpdress, without meaning harm ??

On desktops, a bit of additional RAM and its specs can make all the difference in the world in terms of comfort. A very practical example I’ve lived hundreds of times : you do a right-click. Depending on the machine and the way it is used, the right-click menu will load immediately, or there will be a one-second delay. If there’s this simple one-second delay, annoyance will gradually accumulate, till the moment we just HATE this bloody outdated machine.

I’m afraid this is the case for the WordPress Post Editor. I must confess I’m not using Chrome on a freshly installed computer with top-notch RAM, only using Firefox on a 2-years old Windows7 installed on a SSD disk while the rest of the hardware was a bit above the fold five years ago.

I’ve read here and there complaints that the post editor was getting damn too slow, that there was this little “n-th” of a second delay when we were hitting backspace repeatidly, and the like.
I reckoned all of this was true, but I disagreed, I didn’t find this really annoying.

    And now… A bit more than a month later…

I realize that, as much as I can, I’m writing my posts in advance in notepad++, writing the html by hand, only pasting my almost entirely done html code into the editor when there’s no other choice but to go the wordpress way.

Last year, I was doing absolutely everything in the visual editor with keyboard shortcuts.

Remember what I first wrote, about the one second delay when we make a right click ? Spot on.
I’m afraid the same is happening with the post editor. I didn’t notice me gradually straying away from this core Worpress component, but, yes, I’m straying away from this.

I don’t call for a revolution in the code, with the WordPress team DDOSing the TinyMCE homepage, barricades around their homes, and their drunken younger teenage student parties posted by force on their facebook profile, OK ?
But, well… What I’m trying to say is that, maybe, it might be a good idea not to overdo things with the Editor, Simpler And Functional is better than Awesomer, don’t you think ? ??

The TinyMCE editor really hasn’t changed that much, but I regularly write posts on (god help me) IE 8 on a Windows XP box with 2G memory and a sluggish HD. WordPress is the least of my problems when it comes to speed.

Have you considered maybe it really i just the computer? I mean, maybe you’ve got something wrong? Not a virus, but just something that eats the CPU?

    (@sabinou1)

Nah, I’ve thought hard about it, and my computer remained the same before and after the latest wordpress version. It really is something relevant to WP.
And… it isn’t much, losing half a second here, having a latency response there, having to accept not to keep backspace pressed on for too long and thus resorting instead to control-shift-right/left (but not too fast either !)… It’s a succession of small things that made me, eventually, give up on using the post editor.

I’m a productivity freak. Not everyone is like me. Fortunately.
But I think we’re still witnessing the beginning of a trend, Esmi, you can’t pretend there is not a buzz about wordpress getting too slow admin-side and especially editor-side ??

I’m just hoping to remind that speed does matter. Maybe not more, but, at least, as much as cuteness and comfyness.

I notice you said you were using Firefox… have you tested with other browsers on the same machine?

Just wondering because the editor is terrible on my school laptop using firefox. I mean, really bad lag.

I was a big firefox fan, and just sucked it up for the longest time. Recently installed chrome, and I have zero problems. No delays or lags in the least.

IE8 on my work computer is also quite fast (I haven’t tried IE on my laptop to be honest).

So, while WP might be slowing down in the back end…. browsers can add a sh’load of the problem, at least for me…

I just tested FireFox 10 on my Windows box and howdy, it’s slow!

Not noticed any issues with FF 10 on my Win 7 box but I would never recommend using FF on anything other than a reasonably specc’d desktop machine. It’s always been something of a resource hog. I always use Chrome on my (rather old) laptop & (slightly newer) netbook – otherwise it’s like watching paint dry.

    Ran a Test a Ran-t
    1. Went to TinyMCE page and used the demo editor –no probs.
    GOOD on my oldish 4-core win7 64b
    2. YEA Ditto in chrome.
    3. Used the default WP theme. OOPS -no luck
    4. Loaded posts in Chrome -HEY no probs.
    5. Loaded post in three versions of FFox on three different systems using latest WP. I am starting to get annoyed and headstrong.
-MAJOR PROBLEMA- buffering all puckered -Backspace especially.
Now I am pissed and determined to bury this annoying problem.
    6. Loaded TinyMCE standalone from TinyMCE website in three versions of FFox on three different systems using latest WP.
-NO PROBLEMA- Worked Perfectly. Now I am PERPLEXED.

    7. I propose a possible solution: On a lark I copied the TinyMCE code from the TinyMCE website directly and overwrote the TinyMCE code in the wpincludes folder.
—SPECIFICALLY— I used the improved JQuery plugin model from TinyMCE.
    RESULTS:
A BIG improvement! My modified editor with all of the whistles and bells ring true. The typematic does not overrun anymore! YEA -a short geeky victory jig damaged my cats psyche.

    BOO PARTIAL SUCCESS!

SAD FACE Single backspace is still just as bad as ever…

NOW -I used to blame TinyMCE.
Then I blamed firefox along with many other misinformed WP posters.
Then I blamed my theme and the one bizzzillion plugins -until I tried a clean install. and OOPS sameolsameo
    Now I blame word-depress!!!

To Quote from the above posts,

I’m afraid the same is happening with the post editor. I didn’t notice me gradually straying away from this core Worpress component, but, yes, I’m straying away from this.

There is a code/browser conflict that is fixable. You can count on me finding it eventually -god knows how, but I will not share it with the WP big wigs first. I figure it this way. If little-ole me -a non-programmer has to go around fixing this kind of horse $%*% then why am I using WP? hmm? Forum posts go unanswered everywhere. Many are ticked off. The WP muckety-mucks are not responding to a real turnoff in the WP system. Is WP striking out at the plate? If they value the WP fans out there, then they better bust some code open. Personally I think that it is a simple script load order problem.
If that is the case then I am really mad at all of you programmer types putin us writer types through A BUNCH OF AGGRAVATING *ell for nothing. I HATE SLUGGISH EDITORS AND WANT THIS FIXED.
Foot Stomping RAGE!! I WANT MY TinyMCE EDITOR FIXED NOW NOW NOW -NOW.

WHo is this ‘they’ you speak of?

You throw the term ‘they’ around a lot. There isn’t some overarching WP conglomerate out there trying to make your life hard.

There is us. If you use WP, you are part of us. It’s all volunteers man…. can you fix the editor and make it fabulous? Then do it!! Submit a patch. Get it running all superfly!

There are only so many people, and so many things to work on.

The WP muckety-mucks are not responding to a real turnoff in the WP system.

Same thing goes in the support forum. There is no ‘they’. Just us. Whomever feels like stopping by and helping out when they can.

Here’s some info to get you started, if you think you can help!

Personally, I use Chrome now, and I’m completely happy with the editor. If it gets improved, cool. I love improvement!

Well! Goody for you. I have all my Firefox happy and nice and I should not have to change because THEY want to ignore US!
THEY are the elite core programmers. I throw the term about because THEY do not show us THEIR faces or names often. You are now a THEY, because (due to the fact that you put your head in the sand over the editor) you (Rev. Voodoo) are just as anonymous as THEM. You even behave like ‘them’.

Bug reports have been made. YOU are IGNORANT of this. This bug is being plastered all over the WWW, YOU CONVENIENTLY forgot to read that I am not a programmer and do not even play act as one, do you?

Submit a Patch? W.T.H. is a patch? I am a mere mortal, only a blacksmith beating on this problem with words… Patches smatches.

I am one of the loyalist fans that is getting fed up with “they’s and you’s”. You are perpetuating one HUGE dog pile of justifications for a problem that is hurting the awesome WordPress rep.. A simple thing such as this editor behavior in a major browser (Mozilla) used by millions upon millions (except special Mr. You) is a big deal in the competitive world of blogging engines.

“Bloviating” snobbish opinion spoken in a sneering voice:

Personally, I use Chrome now, and I’m completely happy with the editor. If it gets improved, cool. I love improvement!

THE PROBLEM IS NOT WITH MOZILLA -IT IS WITH WORDPRESS!!
TinyMCE works great in Firefox separately from WORDPRESS.
ARE YOU -OR DO YOU WANT TO FIX THIS ‘thing’?
    AT LEAST I DID

      SOMETHING

    !!!

YOU DID NOTHING EXCEPT CONFUSE THE ISSUE AND ATTACK ME!
    AT LEAST

I narrowed down the problem somewhat

AND YOU-THEY? -CONTRIBUTED NOTHING EXCEPT EMPTY WORDS -NOTHING! ARE YOU BLOWING REALLY HARD ON YOUR KEYBOARD TO PRESS THE KEYS?
Do you -Rev. Voodoo- like slow editors WITH NO BACKSPACE KEY??? Then stop complaining about the likes of me and start doing something instead of pawning the problem off, copping out, whining about the doers, and giving in to the shiny CHROME.

(..not biased here, I use Chrome to do a few chores, and NOW MY EDITING DANG-IT, but still, most of my favorite plugins are still anchored firmly in Mozilla Labs Software. It is a habitual work saving workflow habit developed over time)

OR did I say this already.
PS2 I really meant to say two words initially. KISS OFF.
PS3 MOST of my first post was done “tongue in cheek”, or are you just looking for a fight? I mean come on, everybody knows the generalizing colloquialism “they“.

PS2 I really meant to say two words initially. KISS OFF.

I took your post seriously until I hit that.

    Good bye.

@elan: there are so many things wrong with your post I don’t even know where to begin, so I just won’t.
I’ll just say this (and I think I can speak for most of US, but if I don’t my apologies): your kind of attitude makes us (WP mods and volunteers) seriously question our willingness to help out.

    @ipstenu: Amen, brother.

Elan you were a over the top to say the least, and that kind of behavior, although it does gets attention, it is a negative distraction. That being said, I am having the same problem and boy did my search reveal a rats nest, but your post…made me think.
I will rephrase your inflammatory lecture for you, since your methods failed to work for most.

    a. You are saying that ‘core’ simple things like TinyMCE not working properly is very bad for WP in general -I agree.

    b. You have tested on your 3 systems and used some alternate code from TinyMCE that improved your system -WOW That is a contribution to WP users -Good.

    c. You are obviously a ‘smart’ but wordy non-programmer who is seeking solution for a program. We can all see that this is frustrating to you to no end -RIGHT? Then just say so and don’t beat us all up.

I am being a bit like Dr. Phill here I apologize. The other posters need to read around the “hype” and emotionalism of Elan Drydenhall and see the facts imbedded between the lines, and then move on if they cannot cope or contribute to a solution. Please don’t comment on the hyperbola, it just generates more of the same and from far worse than the Elan Drydenhall types. Instead contribute a potential solution. I believe that the Elans of the world are canaries in the mine.

    Now for my contribution:
I am using WordPress 3.3.1 Graphene with 7 Widgets.
I believe that the idea of a java script conflict in the load order may be correct. My stock TinyMCE editor is acting strangely as compared to the past, and I am unsure exactly when it changed. It could be do to a plugin, could it?.
In the body I am using WordPress SEO by Yoast, Graphene post-specific options, Keyword Density Checker, Background Manager, In the Right sidebar: Zemantia and Inbound Writer.
I discovered with Firebug, that in the post edit page, TinyMCE is loaded at the bottom of the page. Is that correct? It seems strange. I activated the plugin Ultimate TinyMCE, one of my favorites, and there was no change to the stuttering slowness of the keyboard cursor.
I admit that I don’t know what is going on here, but I believe that the right approach is to get into the php and experiment with the load order. Is this the right approavh? Does anybody know how to do that without breaking an otherwise working post admin page? I cannot afford to loose time by making a mess out of my WP server.
O’ by the way, I also went over to https://www.tinymce.com/tryit/full.php and the TinyMCE editor works perfectly in Firefox 4-9. So I can confirmed that Drydenhall at least had that right. It’s gotta be the implementation of the editor in WP, and it probably has a simple solution.
If anyone can help, please just help and don’t let the inflammatory speech of others stop you from taking a logical approach to a problem that is now affecting the WP community at large, and I must add, pay particular attention to the canaries -OK?

Veritaserum – At this point, please make a NEW topic for this issue, and if possible, make sure you test with a vanilla WP. Remember, themes and plugins can often cause this sort of mess, and we always ask you test a clean install first.

The editor in FF is slow, you can fix this by turning off the hardware acceleration Bugzilla

I don’t like using the editor on a live website (https://www.).

In 3 years WordPress has lost my entire post content on clicking Update, often long written posts sadly.

So my solution is a local installation of WordPress and a plugin that allows me to connect to any of my live databases on the one installation. I even install all of my themes on that WordPress so that it switches themes, due to some having their own WYSIWYG editor buttons.

It is a prototype but as my network of blogs grows I will need to create a final solution.

As for “Elan Drydenhall”, don’t be too harsh, it is obvious they need some sort of help. We are not always to blame for our brain activity are we.
