…but I need to experiment with it a little at a time. The first snag I hit was I couldn’t find a way to do drop-down menu bars…can someone tell me whether this is possible? Thanks.

  • 2011 has a build-in drop-down horizontal menu bar.
if you need more than one, and in a different position than below the header, you need to programm them.

please start by creating a child theme of Twenty Eleven to work with.

We have child themes now? Excellent! I should probably try to stay abreast of WP developments a bit more.

I don’t suppose that by chance we also have a way for me to experiment with a new theme on my system, while keeping it the same for everyone else?

With respect to the above question, I’ve been able to accomplish what I wanted to by loading a copy of my site on my desktop, so I’ll consider this resolved. If anyone’s reading, though, it might be a cool feature in the future to allow the developer to view one theme while another one is “in production.”
