• People who sign up through the hosting service partners of WordPress end up getting the crappy version of WordPress. Free users rather have better capabilities, web stats, etc. Paid users rather have to go through the pain to add themes an dplugins etc.

    QUESTION: As a paid web host user who uses WordPress to build his site, there is no API key associated with my account. Where do I get it?

    Some things are just unbelievable with WordPress.

  • Nice details, I have no idea what version of whatever you have on whatever hosting service or what the problem is.

    The “crappy” version? Hmm.

    As a paid web host user who uses WordPress to build his site, there is no API key associated with my account. Where do I get it?

    https://wordpress.com/signup/

    Sign up there for just a username. The API key will be on your profile page at wp.com, as well as in the ‘new user account’ email they send you.

    Thanks Kafkaesqui.

    I already have an account by merely signing up at wordpress.com. It came with an API. I later found that the free service there did not provide flexibility such as CSS customization of themes.

    So, I signed up with a hosting service and downloaded WordPress through their system, as one of the options WordPress suggested. I had to set up a new account which I have used to build my site. This new hosted account does not have API. And guess what! the API from the free open version does not work with this hosted account.

    As I mentioned, all I need is a way to track stats.

    The API key you get from wordpress.com can be used with the wordpress stats plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/stats/
    Once you activate it you enter the API key and you’re done.

    Thanks IcelandDream;

    Before I posted my problem, I had alrady been to your link and gone through the process downloading teh zip file etc. and activating teh plugin. I do not deny that the API can be used with WordPress stats.

    BUT !!!!!!!

    Can the same API from my free online WP.com account work with my SECOND wordpress account (downloaded version) that is being hosted under a web shosting service?

    I ask this question because the downloaded version does not come with API. AS you know, teh web hosting version does not come with many things (It’s notoriously famous for coming with only 2 themes, compared to the nline version which has many).

    As I was saying, I have picked my API from my online account and used it with my account under the downloaded WP version and it DOES NOT WORK. If however you think it shd work, then tell me the steps to take or what I’m doing wrong

    I dont think I can do any better explaining my problem further than what I have already done.

    Thanks for your effort anyway.

    yse and yes. teh aPi key is for teh stats plugin and it does werk/\’;
    if you want themes you can download about several thousand of them and install to yer hearts content. WP is notoriously famous fer not including them…..
    SO!!!
    On the 2nd or 50th hosted blog you can use an API key.

    Suggest reading the docs to get a better grip on the basics. breath deep.

    I knew I wasn’t frustrated for nothing.

    Moshu’s explanation above exactly fits my problem. The API key from “.COM” is supposed to work with the other account under the donwlloaded version from “.ORG”

    Now that I have that assurance, my problem now is why it’s not working in my case. And I have the same e-mail address under both accounts.

    “Can the same API from my free online WP.com account work with my SECOND wordpress account (downloaded version) that is being hosted under a web shosting service?”

    Absolutely it will and it should. That’s what people who use the WordPress software on their own hosts do, myself included. As for why it is not working in your case I have no idea. Perhaps you can contact WordPress.com support?

    Hopefully someone else has an idea other than creating another WP.com account.

    Although I might not be answering your question at all, I would like to get a few things clear.

    First of all, there is no such thing as a word press “Paid” user. Just about any way you look at it WordPress is free. However you ARE paying to have your installation of WordPress hosted. This doesn’t entitle you to anything special. It does give you complete control over your site. This is the advantage of hosting your own site.

    As far as I know, you should be running the newest version of WordPress. So your claim to have a “crappy version of WordPress” isn’t exactly correct.

    WordPress only comes with two themes and very few plug ins by design. This allows the users to pick out themes by there own tastes.
