• I went to change my theme from Being Hueman to Illdy and it installed fine and then crashed.

I believe it is to do with my wordpress being out of date which now prevents my website from working as well as being able to login to the dashboard to fix the problem.

It currently shows: This page isn’t working
https://www.wendyshairandbeauty.co.uk is currently unable to handle this request.
    HTTP ERROR 500

My host isn’t being helpful and can only suggest a restore to last week for a fee.

    Can anybody help please?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Errors like this are logged. Check the error log on your server. If you can’t find the log, please contact your host.

Meantime, enable wp_debug and wp_debug_log and after an error, look at wp-content/debug.log to see if anything gets logged there. https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Debugging_in_WordPress

You can also try this: Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you cannot access wp-admin, there are other ways to deactivate plugins.

Hi Steve, thanks for your reply. I already tried the deactivate plugins via that link as I’m not able to access wp-admin but no joy.

My host provider advised the following: It appears that an update has been run on your website and it has taken it down, this commonly happens when a plugin/theme is updated and does not work on the version of WordPress you are running’. Their solution is to do a backup which comes with an annual fee.

If you’re not doing your own backups, you’ve been negligent.

Since it seems that changng the theme brought on the issue, change your theme to one of the standard “twenty*” ones you might already have installed. Check via FTP to see what you’ve got in wp-content/themes, then see this: https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/wordpress/change-theme-in-db

What error(s) did you see in your debug log?

Hi Steve – Yes I have done my own backups.

It worked, however, it now shows the following message: Warning: mysqli_real_connect(): (08004/1040): Too many connections in /var/www/web/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1538 Deprecated: mysql_connect(): The mysql extension is deprecated and will be removed in the future: use mysqli or PDO instead in /var/www/web/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1569 Warning: mysql_connect(): Too many connections in /var/www/web/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1569

That’s progress of a sort. Something is out of date if you’re seeing the mysql_connect error. But that’s progress!

If you can install plugins, install “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/ On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

You can use that to zero in on what may be causing this.

And: KUDOS for doing your own backups! Trust no one! ??

It’s not allowing me to login at all now. Nightmare. I managed to update the wordpress and then it chucked me out again and came up with that message.

    OK, now enable debug.

This is the error: [2018-01-12 17:58:20] [core:error] [client 86.171.139.240:18492] End of script output before headers: php56-cgi, referer https://wendyshairandbeauty.co.uk/wp-admin/theme-install.php?browse=featured

    Hi seonaidoriordan .,

I hope some files are corrected

Try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.
Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

    Thanks
