• Over the past few months I have been absolutely swamped with spam comments on my blog https://www.mybeachdecor.com
I literally deleted 2500+ spam comments an hour ago, and there are now already 18 new spam comments in there.
I used to have DoFollow, CommentLuv, KeywordLuv and Top Commentator and have now disabled all of them except DoFollow (which I might turn off, too!). The flood of spam comments has not subsided.
I have Akismet installed and activated.
    What else can I do?

  • You could try installing these:

    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/bad-behavior/

    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/cookies-for-comments/

But if those don’t help along with Akismet, then you may have an issue with your theme/plugins. If you have an issue with your plugins (example bad code), then you’ll have to remove them as disabling them will not stop a spammer if a plugin has known bad code.

Do you mean that Akismet is not automatically quarantining your spam comments?

Just in the past two days I’ve noticed a significant increase in the spam to just one of my blogs. Akismet is running and catching some of it, but a lot seems to be passing right through.

Thanks for these tips, guys, I will try installing cookies-for-comments and see how it works. Akismet is quarantining the spam, its just the amount that amasses in there that’s staggering.

Actually, bad behavior looks more like what I need. Will check it out!

As your business grows (yay!), the bad traffic may increase (boo!). There are a range of free options for cleaning spam that have been around for awhile, but it sounds like you are a medium-sized business and the bad guys are flooding you with a large amount of malicious traffic. In this case, you may consider a higher performance paid service that provides advanced spam filtering (like large companies use) and profanity filtering together. If not, the number of miscategorized comments becomes more troublesome as your site’s comment volume grows, and you might not be able to keep up.
