Thumbnail images pixelated

Really like the plugin, but having problem with thumbnail images appearing pixelated when I’m using the widget on the front page of my site. See davewalker.cc and the ‘On the blog’ section, right hand side.
I have set ‘Jpeg Image Quality Ratio’ to 100 (though I can’t see where I’d enable ‘Custom Thumbnails option’ – is this in the pro version?) and emptied the image cache.
The images on the blog are gifs if that makes any difference – I use them for cartoons to keep file sizes low. [Update: Have seen that jpegs are working fine – so, yes, it is the fact they are gifs. Any way around this?]
