  • Hi Cnxsoft,

I’m not sure what might be causing the problem. The feed looks correct. As you mentioned, they do ask for images to be at least 800 px on the smallest size, but they do use images that are smaller.

If you don’t mind, let me know what they have to say. Frankly, their support has not been very good lately, but maybe they will have something useful,

    Hi Chris,

I got the answer below. It looks like the feed needs to be tweaked. Not sure yet if it’s something in the plugin, or in my WordPress configuration.

While reviewing the “全部新闻” name feed section URL and we noticed that the <guid isPermaLink> is not used as intended. If you’re using the value of the isPermaLink attribute as “false”, then kindly provide the unique identifier for it. If you want to provide a full URL then please select the value of the <guid isPermaLink> as “true”.

We also noticed that you are using both <description> and <content:encoded> tags in all the feed URLs of the publications. Instead, we suggest that you use any one of the tags. If both <content:encoded> and <description> tags are present in the feed, Google News crawls the tag with the least number of characters.

    Hi Cnxsoft,

I hate to say this… but they are wrong. The things they are mentioning don’t affect the images displayed for each article… and they are wrong with what they say regardless.

The isPermaLink does include the (non-prettified) url in our feeds, and it’s something I can consider changing, but it works as is for what they use it for, a unique identifier for the article. Thousands of users are using GN Publisher with the guid the same way it’s on your site without issue.

And they don’t use the content/description tag with the least number of characters. That wouldn’t make any sense, they require that the full article be included. They use the tag with the – most – characters. Their support staff has misread their documentation where it says “Google News drops the tag with the least number of characters” (emphasis mine).

I’ve told Google News they are giving out incorrect information several times, but no changes as of yet.

That’s my rant ?? Problem is, I still don’t know what is causing the thumbnails not to be displayed on some of your articles.

If you use the site: search on Google’s images tab, are the images that aren’t being displayed in Google News being successfully crawled and are they appearing on Google’s image search?

I’ve checked a few images that don’t show in GN with Google Image search.
In one case, the image is not appearing in results at all.
In other cases, the image appears but there may be another issue with the website, as I can also see blank images.

    It appears to be random…
In the “All News” section I can see an article about STEAM with the image, but in the review section that relies on a GN Feed from a category, the exact same article does not show with the image.

I wonder if it’s because the website is hosted in China…

I’ve wondered if it’s related to the change in the url from Chinese to punycode. However, it seems like Google would be capable of handling that… but punycode and how the transition to it works… beyond my expertise I’m sorry to say. I’m not sure that’s the issue, just something I’ve wondered about.

So i’ve tried to remove the fetaured image from the content and add it as a media tag, as google instructing.
    Will update if it works.
