Thumbnail preview instead of waiting

I love Foogallery but I am making a website for my friend who is an artist and she doesn’t want each image to load with a loading icon – she doesn’t like the wait times. I have reduced loading time to an absolute minimum but it still seems too long for her.

In order to reduce the perceived wait time for the observer, would it be possible to introduce a feature where the thumbnail of the next image (which is smaller and anyway already in the page cache I presume) would act as a placeholder, until the full size image then fades in on top of it?
