    Hi,

So I’ve had the notice “Thumbnail regeneration is running in the background. Depending on the amount of images in your store this may take a while.” in my admin panel for so long now i cant remember not seeing it. I have assumed it is useful, however it never leaves.

I have recently had issues with the speed of my website and my developer reccomended turning it off. I had an issue with some smartcode slowing down my website and when i cancelled thumbnail regeneration it solved my problem there.

To upload images it takes me ages (maybe 20-30 seconds per 100kb image) and I sort have been living with it up up until the developer said this and up until cancelling found to speed up the front end and fix the smartcode issue I had.

I think it comes from woocommerce but im not sure.

So what I need to know is: Firstly is it healthy for this to constantly be there? Even when I cancel it, it leaves for about 5 minutes then returns. Secondly, if I disabled it would it speed up the back end (which takes about 10 seconds for a page to load, and maybe 30 seconds for an image (100kb average) to be uploaded).

I have no logs pertaining to image_regeneration or anything like that and nothing similar in the scheduled tasks.

    Thanks,

    Otis

    Hi @armedandgorgeous,

    Thanks for reaching out.

If I understand correctly, you seem to be using a Thumbnail regeneration plugin to optimize your images. Is that correct?

is it healthy for this to constantly be there?

If it’s constantly running and not finishing, it might be a sign of a problem. It’s not typical for it to be constantly present in your admin panel. I would recommend reaching out to the plugin’s support team for further assistance.

Disabling the thumbnail regeneration could potentially speed up your backend, especially if it’s been causing slowdowns. However, it’s important to note that this might affect the display of your product images, especially if new ones are added.

You can check out some suggestions on how to speed up your store from this guide.

Looking forward to assisting you further.

No I assumed this message came from woocommerce itself? I do not have any thumbnail plugin that I am aware of in my plugin list. are you saying it doesnt come from woocommerce?

    Hello armedandgorgeous,

    Thank you for your reply.

The Thumbnail Regeneration feature is a functionality found in Themes and also in WooCommerce.

First, let’s try to determine if this specific action for thumbnail regeneration is triggered by WooCommerce.

Could you share a screenshot of the notice you see about thumbnail regeneration?
And how do you cancel it?

To find out if this is coming from WooCommerce, disable the WooCommerce plugin and then check if the notice is still there. If it is there, cancel it and see if it comes back.

Let me know about your findings. ??

    Best regards.

Hi, so I am slightly tentative to disable it because I cant disable it until I disable all plugins that require it which is 6 other ones. However from insecting the page you can clearly see the css selector to be woocommerce-message

    https://imgur.com/a/b2h0E0U

upon dismissing notice, it comes back within 5 minutes of dissapearing.

I have checked the scheduled actions. nothing for thumbnail, image, or regeneration/regenerate. I do have facebook regeneration https://imgur.com/PGkdckX

But disabling facebook for woocommerce still gave me this error.

I have looked in woocommerce logs, nothing about thumbnail regeneration in there either.

I have read a few blogs regarding this similar issue. it sounds like it comes from woocommerce core and is generally triggered by a theme change. I havent changed themes in years, however we do upload new products frequently (more than once week) so I dont know if this is causing it? I read one blog saying that it came after adding a product, although it did go after dismissing it (which mine just comes back).

    Hey, @armedandgorgeous!

Thanks for the information and the screenshots.

I understand that testing if the issue still happens with Woo deactivated or switching themes to check is complicated on a live site.

Are you able to create a staging site to run those tests? You can ask your host if they offer this service), or you can use WP Staging for quickly spinning up a new test site.

If you can, please do and check if the issue persists after deactivating Woo and also after switching to a default theme such as Storefront.

Please let us know how it goes.

    Have a wonderful day!

Hi so Ive tested this on staging and then also on the live site to be sure, but deactivating every plugin required for woocommerce doesnt remove the thumbnail regenration notification. However as soon as woocommerce is disabled it then goes – so I can confirm this comes from the woocommerce plugin.

However when reactivating the woocommerce plugin it did not immediatley come back.

I created a new product using an image already in our image libary (so did not upload antthigh) and then at that point the notifcation has returned

    Hi @armedandgorgeous

Thank you for reaching back, with further details on this.

I created a new product using an image already in our image libary (so did not upload antthigh) and then at that point the notifcation has returned

Note, when you make changes to image sizes/aspect ratios in the customiser, or if your theme changes image sizes, WooCommerce will detect these changes and queue a background regeneration job. As I understand, no image or theme change occurred there. Correct?

Moreover, to clarify, did you already try clicking on the Cancel thumbnail regeneration option, seen up-top to the right here, and see if cancels it and the message goes away, or otherwise?

A few other noteworthy facts, here:

    • The maximum simultaneous queue is of 1 action
    • Took 1,57s for the page to load
    • There are 26 Pending actions

The aforementioned might translate to limited server resources, and/or issue(s) with Cron.

I hope this is helpful! Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
We will be happy to help you further.

    Hi,

yes no image or theme change occured which is why i didnt understand why it turned on. I can cancel it but it then returns within maybe 5 minutes or even less.

The serve has just been upgraded (note that it was showing this long before the server was upgraded) with a doubling of resources so even with this it still shows the error.

I have not looked into cron I am not too sure what it even is to be honest .
