• Hello,

I like Meow gallery and how seamlessly it integrates with WordPress. My only concern are the thumbnails – it looks like they are simply scaled down from the large size images, is that correct?

  • Hello Alexander,

That’s weird because we are using the native WordPress gallery, so we don’t generate the markup ourselves.

Thereof I don’t think a thumbnail problem is caused by the plugin, have you tried changing the thumbnail size when you create the gallery ?

    Best regards,

    Hello Thomas,

it appears that the size="thumbnail" parameter automatically gets stripped (I never thought about these parameters since I’ve been using Jetpack’s Tiled Galleries before, which in turn uses Jetpack’s Photon to resize the thumbnails).

I manually changed it to size="medium" but it doesn’t seem to have an effect; when I right-click an image from the thumbnail grid and select “Open image in new tab” it’s the full-size file.

I even went and deactivated Jetpack’s Tiled Galleries altogether – no difference.

Care to take a look? This is the post I’m messing with (this is my wife’s website).

    Thanks

Oh I understand now, after looking at the actual markup, the image loaded is the medium one BUT WordPress is now using responsive images, meaning that it will load the best picture for your screen size / resolution.

My guess here is that if you are on a high-res screen ( such as a Retina screen ), the image loaded is the full one since it’s the one that will render the best on your screen.

I would have to try on a low-res screen to make sure of it but I think this is what’s happening now.

    Cheers

    I’m on a 24″ 1920×1200 screen – that’s not “retina high” resolution as far as I know. ??

I don’t think that’s the case. I deactivated Meow Gallery and let WordPress render its built-in gallery – the thumbnails are the “medium” resolution files then, so my guess would be that Meow Gallery somehow skips that parameter.

If you want to take another look to compare while Meow Gallery is off?

Hi, any update on this? Thanks…

    Hello Alexander,

Sorry for the delay, we had a look at your website and indeed with the native gallery the image used is the medium one.

This is definitely something with the responsive images, since in the markup it’s not the full size image in the src attribute.

We now have to find why the browser is thinking that a bigger size is better for our gallery, but not for “wordpress” gallery ( that are the same .. )..

    Best regards,
    Thomas
