Thumbnail styling options or at least hints

Hi.

My thumbnail functions (for adding new thumbnail sizes to call) was useless with plugin.

I cannot set both the height and width. I can only set one or the other, and then it scales entire image. Would like to be able to scale.

Please give me some direction for knowing how to scale/crop images.
