On our site we had nice thumbnails, but now it’s a list.
We changed the settings, but although it stays a list.

    Who can help us?

Hi @janvankuijk, sorry you’ve been having trouble getting it to look the way you want.
It sounds like you have YARPP set to use the “List” template instead of the “Thumbnails” template.
To change which template is in use, go to the WordPress Admin dashboard, then under “Settings” choose “YARPP”. Look in the “Automatic Display Options” and click the “Thumbnails” (here’s a screenshot) button and save.

    Does that help?

If you’ve already done that, or it doesn’t help, could you please send us the YARPP debug info? Here’s how:
To send us YARPP debug info,
    1. From WordPress admin dashboard, under “Settings” click “YARPP”
    2. Click “Help” in the top-right corner
    3. Click “Optional Data Collection” tab on the left
    4. Copy all the monospaced text
    Here’s a video: https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1Nw3IaXhs_7RTlUdzB5iTeBcymwcIJOby

You can paste it in here (there’s nothing too sensitive, it’s mostly YARPP settings) or send it to us through our contact page.

    Hi,

    Will you please help me?
    This is indeed what’s happening:
It sounds like you have YARPP set to use the “List” template instead of the “Thumbnails” template.

    But how to change?

Hi @janvankuijk, sorry I missed your replies from 2 weeks ago. It looks like your settings are set to show thumbnails correctly, but are somehow getting ignored (your settings also say to show 12 related posts but the site is only showing 3.)
I did notice that, extra strangely, there are some settings in there that aren’t from YARPP, but from WRI plugin. This is the first I’ve heard of WRI, but it sounds like an alternative to YARPP which strangely also piggybacks off it. It would be good to rule out that they’re not the cause of this error by, at least temporarily, deactivating it.
What do you think of that? If you so try deactivating that other plugin, does YARPP work as expected?

    (@janvankuijk)

    Michael,

When I disable WRI then all the related items disappear.
We bought WRI because it’s so easy toi connect WooCommerce products with post and vice versa!

    Wow.

After I send the mail to you I enabled WRI again and guess what ….. it works.
Except the images are in a bad quality.

Ah ok thanks for the update @janvankuijk.
Ya WRI does sound like it adds a few features we’ve been considering. I’ve tried to get its free version to work on my test site for a few minutes now and so far haven’t had much luck. But it looks like WRI’s settings are meant to mostly override YARPP’s. Eg, in their admin page, you can configure YARPP to use a list or thumbnails for each post type. See screenshot. I suspect you activated WRI but it’s configured to use the “list” instead of “thumbnails.”
I’d suggest you try reactivating WRI, make sure that template setting (see screenshot I mentioned above) is set to “thumbnails”, and if it’s not working right to get in touch with WRI pro support. I expect they would better know how WRI’s settings override YARPP’s.
If you decide to not use WRI, and just YARPP, we can continue the discussion on how to improve YARPP’s thumbnail quality.
    Does that sound good?

    Hi Michael,

The main problem is that the guy from WRI don’t answer anymore ??

Question: is is with your plugin poible to connect one wine to more recipes or vice versa? So could it be posible to use only your plugin? In one or the other way?

Will you help us with that?

Hi @janvankuijk sorry somehow I missed your reply from a week ago. Ya that’s disappointing that WRI isn’t responding anymore (especially if its a paid plugin).

YARPP doesn’t yet support specifying exactly which related posts to use, it only automatically calculates them.

You can probably still use YARPP with a bit of custom coding.

You can use the same category (or tag or custom taxonomy) on both a wine and a recipe, then instruct YARPP to mainly consider that category (or tag or custom taxonomy).
Then you’ll want to add some code to your theme’s wine template (here’s WordPress’ documentation on how to figure out which file that is in your theme) to instruct it to only show related recipes (instead of related posts, wines, recipes, etc).
Something like this would be added to the file:

    yarpp_related(array('post_type' => ['recipe']));

If you haven’t done much PHP much that will probably be a bit daunting and probably deserves hiring a developer.

    Does that make sense?

    Thread Starter janvankuijk

    (@janvankuijk)

    Yesss!
I was thinking about the same. So that can be the way.

One question for a little bit help. I’m not a developer, but knows a guy in India for this, but ….. is it possible to add your related items somehow in Elementor Pro (the posts-template and the products-template)?

    Jan

    Plugin Support Michael Nelson

    (@mnelson4)

Oh ok cool. Hmmm I’m a bit rusty on my Elementor Pro (only used the free version once) but it certainly should be. You just need to be able to tell Elementor what custom PHP to use and then yes Elementor could show the related posts. If Elementor doesn’t let you add PHP directly, you can create a custom shortcode and add that to Elementor (YARPP has a shortcode but it wouldn’t yet let you specify what post types to show.)

One downside to using yarpp_related(array('post_type' => ['recipe'])); in a template is that it doesn’t use YARPP’s caching. This means it will take about 0.1-0.2 seconds to calculate related posts everytime someone visits a page using that code snippet. That’s pretty slow for high traffic sites; although on low-traffic sites visitors will barely notice it. I’m sorry we don’t have a better solution for that yet.
