Thumbnails resizing rather than cropping

I’ve had a search for this in the forums and on the troubleshooter but can’t see anything that quite matches my issue – apologies if it’s already been answered.

I have a few basic galleries where I’ve set the thumbnails to a specific size using the ‘thumbnail size’ field, and they would resize and crop as necessary so that every thumbnail was of an identical size. This defintiely worked when I first set the galleries up late last year. On updating my plugins just now I was checking the site over and noticed that my gallery thumbnails now merely resize horizontally, but don’t crop. I don’t know for sure that they were working right before the update as I didn’t check it right beforehand, but I know it worked in the recent past. This new behaviour is consistent across all my galleries. They behave the way I want – cropping and resizing to identical sizes – in preview.

I have no Retina Support checked, and Force Original Thumbs is unchecked. I have tried clearing the cache. I’m not using any custom CSS so this is entirely the gallery’s base output. Is there a new setting that I’m missing?
