Tiled Gallery: thumbnail quality

It does indeed look a little blurry, and I believe it may happen when Photon resizes the images.

When the image isn’t resized, you can’t really spot any differences between the original image and the one hosted with Photon:

If you apply Photon’s resize parameter, things still look good:

However, if you apply the w and h parameters instead (like in the Tiled Galleries), things get a little blurry:

I’m not really sure why the quality isn’t the same depending on the parameter in use, so I’ve asked one of our Photon experts to take a closer look. We’ll let you know what we find!

it is my understanding that the Tiled Galleries are always using Photon for the thumbnail re-sizing anyway.

thank you for the verification and confirmation. In the version that uses the w and h parameters, it looks as if the resulting output file is actually 1 pixel smaller on each side than the one using the resize parameter.

Let’s hear what the master of Photon will speak. ??

We’ve made some changes, and things should look better now! The problem should now be solved.

Hello Jeremy, the images from the first example do look better now indeed.

The problem with the square crop image in the second example remains though. When I use “Inspect Element” on that particular tile (lower right) I see that the size is shown as 322 x 323, while the actual image is square format (900 x 900).

It appears like that in the source as well so I’m guessing this is a result of the layout that the Tiled Gallery magic algorithm chose:

I can resolve this by changing this particular Tiled Gallery style to “Square Tiles” instead of the default “Rectangular” and I guess I’ll eventually do just that, but I thought I’d leave it for now so that you can take another look.

It could be that those images were still cached. I just flushed our cache; let me know if it helps!

Thank you Jeremy – I flushed my browser cache(s) as well (tried three different ones again) but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Images resized by Photon with the w and h parameter are still blurry, unfortunately.

Can the Tiled Galleries be switched internally to use resize instead of w and h?

I’ll have to get our Photon experts to take another look into this. I’ll ask if it’s possible to switch to the resize parameter also.
