Time glitches & slug limitations

  • The plugin automatically publishes a post if the Date Settings are set to Current Time, and one has to set a time 1 second or more in the future for a duplicate post to be saved as a draft.

    Also, it duplicates the slug of the post being duplicated, and does not automatically update the slug when the title is changed.

    This would be ok if I was using the plugin for myself as I usually tweak the slug for optimal SEO wording, but for a client who has zero knowledge of WordPress and the importance of the Slugs, it makes this plugin limted.

    It means they have to remember to change the slug, and to do so in a sensible way.

    If these two issues didn’t exist I would say this plugin is good, it seems to be nice and light, and simple to use, but the slug duplication issue is unfortunate, while the timestamp issue has been brought up in the support section on numerous occasions without resolution.

    If you want the duplicated post set to draft after duplication all you need to do is set the Post Status to Draft on the Tools > Post Duplicator page.

    I can understand the desire for the slug manipulation, but the purpose of the plugin is simply to quickly and easily duplicate posts. I may implement a feature in the future to set a name and slug before posts are duplicated, but currently user’s do need to manually change the title and slug themselves.

    This does not work if the duplicated post status is set to Draft, and the date is set to Current Time.

    What happens in this case, is that the duplicated post is automatically Published with the same content, and the same title (it is immediately published as duplicate content on the front end). The Draft request status is ignored in other words.

    Setting the time to even 1 second in the future prevents the duplicated post from being published upon duplication.

    The timestamp issue is clearly a problem, as can be seen from the many threads about this in the support area. I also would have opened my own support thread about this before reviewing if the question had not already been raised numerous times.

    I added some detailed information to my review so that the people reading it have a couple of ideas on how to overcome these things should they decide to use the plugin, because there is nothing in the installation or setup instructions, and there is no FAQ’s section which might help people understand what they need to do in order to work around the “problem”.

    My review is that the plugin is “good”, but there are other plugins that do exactly what this one does, and without these two particular issues.

    I very much appreciate that building plugins takes hard work, and I am grateful to all developers who make their work available to the community, which is also why I took the time to offer what I hope is a balanced review based on my experience of testing it.

    I’d be more than happy to test it again later if you decide to continue developing and enhancing the features, and to change my rating based on the improved options.
