Time limit exceeded and errors in the log

    Hello,

    Since a week orso we have been getting the error: “Details:?The scan time limit of 3 uren has been exceeded and the scan will be terminated. This limit can be customized on the options page.?Get More Information“

    When I check the log I often see: “Trying to access array offset on value of type bool (2) File: /home/XXXXXXXXXX/domains/XXXXXXXXXXX.nl/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/lib/wordfenceURLHoover.php Line: 114”

    Weirdest thing is that the scan seems to start around 00:00 and fails around 00:30 claiming it has run for more then 3 hours?

    Could there be a setting in my WordPress that is causing this? Or perhaps a setting in Wordfence that is set wrong?

    If you require a status-report, is there one from Wordfence I need to copy/paste?
    When I go to wp-admin/admin.php?page=WordfenceTools&subpage=diagnostics I don’t see anything weird.

    Could you please do the following steps for me:

    • Go to the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page
    • In the “Debugging Options” section, check the circle “Enable debugging mode” 
    • Click to “Save Changes”.
    • CANCEL any current scan and start a NEW scan
    • Copy the last 20 lines from the Log (click the “Show Log” link) or so of the activity log once the scan finishes and paste them in this post.

    Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostic > Debugging Screenshot

    This will help me see exactly what is happening when the scan fails.

    Additionally, please send a diagnostic report to [email protected]. You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

    NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Apologies for my following up on my post. We have had some major websites issues due to another plugin. So we have had to priorities getting everything working again and sorting out the problem.

    Hi @supervinnie41, thanks for reaching out to us.

    Sometimes, a higher max_execution_time value has been found to be detrimental to scan speed. We have seen issues arise when this number exceeds 60, although Wordfence will only attempt to use half of this value by default. Certainly, try changing that number before trying the following so I can get the information I need to help you? 

    • Stop the existing scan if it is still running (The “Start New Scan” button turns into a “Stop” button while the scan is running).
    • Go to your Wordfence > Scan > Manage Scan and locate the “Performance Options” section. Set “Maximum execution time for each scan stage” to 20.
    • Click to “Save Changes”.
    • Go to the Tools > Diagnostics page.
    • In the “Debugging Options” section check the circle “Enable debugging mode”.
    • If “Start scan remotely” is checked, uncheck this option.
    • Click to “Save Changes”.
    • Start a new scan on the Scan page.
    • If the scan fails again, copy the last 20 lines or so from the Log (click the “Show Log” link) once the scan finishes and paste them in the post.

    I’d like to see the log again after the max_execution_time change to see  if it’s linked/still fails after the value of 300 is reduced.

    On some sites, this will correct the issue. Adding “20” for the “Maximum execution time for each scan stage” tells the scan to pause every 20 seconds and start again where it left off, which makes the scan more performance-friendly for some servers. If this fixes the issue and scans run again, you can leave all the settings above except for “Enable Debugging Mode”.

    I couldn’t find your diagnostic report on email. Navigate to Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostic page and then click the “Export” button. Send the txt file to [email protected]. Add your forum username in the subject and respond here once done.

    I wanted to let it run for a few days before replying. But at the moment it is hit and miss. One day it’s all fine. The next it fails again.
    I will update once I have found a stable performance.

    Max_execution_time has been dialed back to 120

    Maximum execution time for each scan stage has been set to 20

    But scans keep failing.
    I’d like to show the log, but it keeps giving me a 502 error. I had to set the Max execution time back to 300 in order to get it to show up.

    Scan Time Limit Exceeded errors are generally caused by either scanning a VERY large number of files, or something running slowly at the host. Go to Wordfence > Scan > Scan Options and Scheduling and check to see if the bottom two options in General Options are disabled. It would be best to have those disabled for now (Scan files outside your WordPress installation, Scan images, binary, and other files as if they were executable)

    Additionally, please confirm that the Scan Option is set to Standard. Be sure to save your changes in case you make any changes here.
