Timeout errors and spinning circles

    Previous posters have beat me to related issues, but the topics were closed due to inactivity. There are two halves to my problem. First, I’m getting a lot of timeouts, which is new for me.

    Second, when there is a timeout error on a new media file upload, your spinning icon never stops. (When there is a timeout error on a file already in the media library, the spinning does stop and the x sizes not compressed message reappears.)

    Unfortunately, there are a lot of moving parts to my configuration this week: I’m running on localhost with your new version and WordPress 4.5-RC.

    I do also have a live server with your new version and WordPress 4.4.2. I haven’t forced a timeout there, but the spinning still seems a little wonky. Even for successful compressions, I have to refresh the page for it to stop.

    Hi,

    We’re sorry to hear that you’re getting a lot of timeouts.

    Are you getting timeouts for large size images, or also for smaller ones? Are you only getting timeouts on WordPress 4.5 running on localhost, or also on the older WordPress version on your live server?
    As you mentioned, there are a lot of differences between your environments, and it’s helpful to know if any of these differences is causing you to get these timeouts.

    In regards to the bugs you reported about the spinning icon, you’re completely right. We’ve put them on the list of things to fix. Thanks for that!

    Thanks very much. I’m glad to hear the spinning is on your list — it worries me more that the plug-in doesn’t recover from the timeout error than that it has the timeout error. You know? You lose the whole file upload and any successful compressions when there is a timeout error.

    I think the timeout is just on localhost for me. So not super important – I’ll increase my max_execution_time. It definitely happens more on the larger image sizes.

    Off-topic: You mentioned that you’re all set for WP 4.5. Do developers/users need to worry about the change from 90% to 82% WP image quality when also using your plug-in?

    We understand. We are also trying to improve the speed on our server to reduce the timeout errors in the first place.

    As for the quality, our plugin sets the quality to 95% for the images before we compress them. This is because our compression algorithm is designed to work with uncompressed input. So if you use our compression service, you will still get an intelligent compression result based on the input, instead fixed to a certain number.
