timeout-or-duplicate error
-
Dear WordPress Wizards,
I’m encountering a problem when using Easy Forms for Mailchimp. When people want to sign up they either get an error message that says: timeout-or-duplicate or subscriber is already signed up. My peeps can’t sign up and I don’t know what to do.
This is the landing page: lifecoachsophie.com/self-confidence-video-series/
Please, help! Thank you ??
Best wishes from Florence, Italy,
Sophie

Hello @sophiecharlotte,
I just tested the form and I was able to subscribe!
However, a ‘timeout-or-duplicate’ is an unfortunately formatted response from the Google reCAPTCHA that occurs when a form is submitted multiple times. If someone, for example, put in a bad email address (like [email protected]) they would receive a MailChimp error. If they tried to subscribe again (with a valid email), they would see this ‘timeout-or-duplicate’ response from the reCAPTCHA. Could this be the issue?
In reference to the “Already signed up” message, could it be that users have signed up for your mailing list via the popup and then are trying to sign up again via the form? I noticed both forms are attached to the same list.
Let me know if either of those are plausible explanations!
Florence sounds lovely. Best wishes from Philadelphia! ??
Kevin.
Hey @yikesitskevin,
Thank you so much for your kind reply! Unfortunately, I haven’t received the message that you – a true power babe obviously ?? – have subscribed. This means that it isn’t working… I guess you didn’t get a confirm subscription mail either, right? My web help guy also mentioned that it’s most likely the reCACPTCHA and we have a serious problem there since we’ve had to install your fab plugin so we could use CAPTCHA because before, when I just used the embedded code from MailChimp and put in a raw HTML template, I got a spam bot attack :(. So it’s either spam and sign ups or no spam thanks to reCAPTCHA but no sign-ups either. What to do, what to do?!
Thank you!
Best from a boiling hot Florence,
Sophie
Oh but I am subscribed! Check your list for an @yikesinc.com email. I received the double opt-in confirmation email from MailChimp and followed through with it. I got the email “How to Become More Self-Confident Video #1” on August 5th ??
I still think the issue is related to users trying to sign up multiple times but maybe there is something else going on.
Did your web help guy have any more information?
Let me know.
All the best,
Kevin. How weird, you ARE subscribed! (Feeling more confident already? ?? ) I just didn’t get the notification e-mail…
Are there any settings I might have to change to get the notifications? I used to get them…
Do you think I should get rid of the pop-up thing to avoid multiple sign-ups?
Such a mistery.
My web guy says it’s a problem because it’s the choice between either the spam bot attack or CAPTCHA and this challenge… But maybe you’ve now changed something with your magic touch.
What happens when you sign up with a different address on this page: lifecoachsophie.com/self-confidence-video-series/
Sorry to ask you, but I need to solve this issue!
Thank you!
Just FYI this is what I got from the support team at MailChimp, that’s why I contacted you:
Soul (MailChimp)
Aug 3, 12:39 PM EDTHello Sophie,
Thank you for reaching out to MailChimp Support. My name is Soul, and I’m on the case to investigate into that signup form.
To get an idea of how that signup form was interacting with, and submitting information into our system I accessed it on the site: https://lifecoachsophie.com/
The first time I tried inputting my information into the signup form, it returned a check your inbox for confirmation message. With the second time I tried using that signup form with the same email address I got this error: https://cl.ly/0q1s0u38300A
Then I received this error message with the third time I tested that signup form: https://cl.ly/121D2s2F452d
While performing this testing I put a trace on that signup form and saw some interesting behavior happen from it as I was digging into this. From what I as seeing the form was only submitting the email address into the account once per email address. Any other time that same email address was inputted, it would not submit and return one of those error messages. In this case, I believe there is an issue with the signup form itself that is causing these addresses not to be submitted.
It does appear to be from a third-party integration service, so I’m not familiar with this particular form or how its setup. I would go to the page of that plugin within WordPress to contact the support team of that signup plugin. From there they should be able to look into how that plugin is interacting within WordPress and see what is at play that is preventing it from working and what can be done to resolve that.
If after contacting the support team of that plugin, they have anything we can do on our end to assist with that be sure to let me know. I am here to help in each and every way that I can to get that form up and running to add new addresses into your List.
Thank You,
Soul—
Also, the notification settings are OK in MailChimp… What else could it be?
Thanks again!
Sophie
Hi Sophie,
The reason you didn’t get a confirmation email is that I originally used the Easy Forms form and received the double opt-in (confirm your subscription) email and I did not confirm my subscription. I then tried to subscribe via the popup to see if there were any conflicts. The popup is using single opt-in and single opt-in subscriptions do not generate notification emails.
I just tried to subscribe again and was able to first time no problem. This time I confirmed my subscription via the double opt-in email. Look for a new gmail email address in your subscribers list.
In response to Soul from MailChimp, we both had the same experience: the first time you submit the form the subscription works, if you try to submit another one without refreshing you get ‘timeout-or-duplicate’, and if you refresh and submit a third one you get the “You’re already subscribed” message.
The reason she only sees us submitting the email address “once per email” is that we check if the email already exists on the MailChimp list before sending another subscription request. If the email already exists, we do not send the request again.
Does that make sense?
All the best ??
Kevin.
