To All Experiencing Errors & or White Screen of Death

  • I recently updated to the latest version of W3-Total Cache 0.9.5, a fantastic plugin btw, and I was hit with immediate regret. I got the White Screen of Death!

    “Why me?!” I thought.

    Suddenly I was hit with an uncontrollable rage that made me black out temporarily. When I woke up, I cleaned myself up, threw away my favorite pair of boxers (Kirkland brand) and began hacking.

    I call hacking anything that requires fast typing and rapid eye blinking. My hacking tool for this problem was Google. Pretty much any browser has it. I quickly found a tutorial that had a quick and easy fix!

    26 minutes later and my site was up and running! (Here’s the link, it may take you less than 26 minutes!). I renamed the W3-Total-Cache plugin folder to [folder name].old (just like in the tutorial).

    I really hope the coders of W3-Total-Cache can stop counting the millions of dollars they made from this plugin and just solve MY problem…because I MATTER.

    Hmmm…I am using version 5.3.10…is W3-Total Cache’s latest version incompatible with this version of PHP?

    the whitescreen of death can also occur if you are using a current version of PHP and another plugin which is directly accessing some of w3tc functions respectively classes.

    Unfortunately with v0.9.5 the developers did not pay much attention on backwards compatibility and this was the reason the plugin broke one of my sites, although php 5.6.x was used.

    I hope there will be an update soon which readds at least some backward compatibility.

    I also had the internal server error / white screen problem after the last update. For me the PHP upgrade from 5.2.x => 5.6.x solved the issue.

    (Had to rename the W3 TC files and folders at server side to disable the plugin and get access to the site and admin UI)

    As it seems that the php version is the major source of problems experienced by users after the 0.9.5 update, I hope that the W3 Total Cache developers update the release notes and all the similar materials stating that users should check their PHP version prior the update to avoid crashing their sites.

    I have about 73 sites with W3TC installed. Three went to the white screen so I set them back to the older version of W3TC. The rest updated fine.

    All 73 sites are running on various versions of PHP. For the 3 that crashed 2 are running on php v 5.6.25 and one is running on php v 7.0.10.

    I generally install the same plugins on all my sites. There are variations but I’m not seeing a pattern unique to the 3 that failed.

    Since Yoast reported that WP Media pointed us to a high-risk XSS vulnerability, should I uninstall W3TC from the sites that I can’t update? Anyone find a solution?

    Thanks for clearing that up! I honestly thought I was going to have to update to a newer version. I think what you’re saying makes total sense. For the time being I have reverted back to the older version of the plugin. Thanks!

    Oh yes it is!! The link I provided isn’t actually my website, but it did solve my problem. I used the tips from that article to get rid of the ‘White Screen of Death’ and then I reinstalled the previous version of the app. I’ll continue using it until the developers create a working update.

    HOW THE HECK! Do you have 73 websites?!?!

    How do you find time to maintain all of them? How much money are you making monthly from all of those websites?

    Some sites we manage updates for. Some sites our clients maintain. I do keep all plugins up-to-date and manage the server to keep it up to snuff. All our clients pay us to help them with this.

    Just want to give an update. The culprit was a plugin called google-maps-builder. I deleted that and W3TC updated without breaking the site.

    Hmmm…it’s probably a function that GMB uses. I’ve read that W3TC is conflicting with various plugins.
