• CATASTROPHIC PROBLEMS – latest version apparently has serious bugs.

Dear WP team, please make the older version available so we can reinstall it.

For my part, the website became completely inaccessible immediately after updating to 3.2.1. (today sept 19), after having worked normally on the same day before I updated.

In reading other posings it appears to me that I am not alone in getting the same or other problems.

WordPress is great and I hope you find a solution soon.

Which older version do you feel like downloading? I’d stay away from 0.71-gold myself. Scroll down to the bottom of that page for more current versions.

Nah. But plugins and themes have been poorly written. *shudder*

I’m sorry to hear you’re having a rough time with it. What have you done to diagnose your problem? Have you

    1) Disabled all plugins
    2) Switched to the TwentyTen theme

If you provide us some more tangible information we maybe able to help you out.

    Thank You Jan,

As it is impossible to access the site, I have not been able to do any of your suggested measures.

EXACTLY THIS HAPPENS: I open the url of our site: “https://tmdoctors.info/wordpress/wp-admin/”

    This yields the following response:

    Server error
The website encountered an error while retrieving https://tmdoctors.info/wordpress/wp-admin/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.

    And so I am stuck.

I can access the WordPress directory at the server by FTP but I don’t know what files to change.

QUESTION: Can I just install an older version upon this one? Or must I delete certain files or folders f?rst in the WordPress directoy at our server.

    Well, start simply.

    1) Disable your plugins via FTP.

Rename wordpress/wp-content/plugins/ to wordspress/wp-content/plugins-old/ and create a new empty wordpress/wp-content/plugins/ directory.

After that visit https://tmdoctors.info/wordpress/wp-admin/ and see if that works.

    2) Over write the WordPress files on top of your installation.

Can you download 3.2.1 via https://www.ads-software.com/latest.zip and extract that on top of your /wordpress/ directory via FTP? It will only over write the files in the distribution. If you modified any of those files, then those modifications will be lost.

    Thank you.

    1. I did exactly what you said under point 1, but this did not change the siutation, see https://tmdoctors.info/wordpress/wp-admin/

    2. Why should I download 3.2.1 as it has been successfully installed (today, according to the install report) and immediately ceased functioning, so I have not done any changes to it? Would it not be better to install an older version? There was no problems or disturbances during the installation so I think the probabiilty is little that an installation accident is the issue, considering also that a number of other users have the same problem. Is it not more likely that there is some really serious bug in this release?

Why should I download 3.2.1 as it has been successfully installed (today, according to the install report) and immediately ceased functioning

Because it’s not working. The 500 error means PHP is tossing errors so either something is wrong with your web server, or a PHP file somewhere is corrupted. You didn’t change your web server so I’m suspecting that your 3.2.1 files are not 100% right.

Your webserver is fine as far as I can tell. These links work:

    https://tmdoctors.info/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php
    https://tmdoctors.info/wordpress/readme.html

    The rest toss 500 errors.

By overwriting the existing files with stock 3.2.1 ones at the minimum you’ll be able to cross that off the list.

If you had access to your web server logs, you could look at the error.log or access.log files. But you only have FTP access so any fixes are just a guess.

    Edit:

Is it not more likely that there is some really serious bug in this release?

There are what, a half-million installs of 3.2.1? If that was it, the volume of noise would be HUGE. It could be a bug but statistically that’s just unlikely.

Also what version did you upgrade from?

Thank you Jan, for your kind attention.

Ok, I will try your suggestions.

The upgrade was from the version just before 3.2.1. and it worked fine. Would it not yet be simpler to just reinstall the former version? I would prefer that before seeking errors as I am afraid it may take much time.

How to to that? Do Can I rename the 3.2.1. directories into “-old” and when install is successful, delete them?

The version before 3.2.1 was 3.2.

You can download the previous version from the release page at

    https://www.ads-software.com/wordpress-3.2.zip

You should be able to just overlay the files on top of your /wordpress/ directories.

IMPORTANT This shouldn’t harm anything if you were on 3.2. If you were on 2.x then this is not a good idea. Too many things changed from the 2.x branch.

The differences from 3.2 to 3.2.1 are listed at this link and aren’t that major file-wise.

It’s probably late to ask, but do you have any file backups of your installation? FIle backups from last week for example.

EDIT: PLEASE BE CAREFUL. I just looked at your site in Google’s cache. That shows you were running 3.0.5 not 3.2.

If you can make a backup somehow of your installation, that would be a really good idea.

    (@tmdoctors)

    Dear Jan,

No installation file backups done. So I try first to reinstall 3.2.1 considering your warning. Now I have to stop for today.

Many thanks for your kind helpfulness and have a good day!
