Todo stays outstanding after quiz.

I have scrolled through the support items but cannot find someone with the same problem. Not sure if this might be a Watu problem or Namaste!
I’m using Watu to do my quizzes and each of my 7 lessons has a quiz which must be completed successfully before continuing to the next lesson.
As my students grew I’ve decided to change the setting in Watu “ Do not store user answers in the database to save DB space.” and ticked it.
My students contacted me to complain that they cannot continue to the next lesson after completing the lesson and quiz successfully. They received the message “ Must complete lesson Y to continue to lesson X). On checking their student page they find that the to-do (quiz) for the lesson is still outstanding
I changed the Watu setting back to save answers to database and the problem went away.
Is this normal or am I missing something?
