Hi, a few weeks ago I installed WP 2.9 when it was released. The minute after all was done I started to receive hundrids and hundrids of spam to my main e-mail account. Contacted my provider and had been told it must come from my website/blog and that they have not changed anything.
don’t know if there is a connection between the two (installation and spam) but it’s becoming unsostainable. Get one about every 5 minutes. Anyone has a solution?
    Thanks
    David

  • @duzimage,

    Two questions:

    1) Did you upgrade WP from the proper source (ie www.ads-software.com) ?

    2) Is the email address in question in the same domain as your wordpress domain? (ie: https://www.domain.com and [email protected]) ?

Hi I simply hit “upgrade automatically” just like I did now to upgrade to 2.9.1

Email used to be the same yes, but as I started to get the spam I changed to WordPress account mail to a different one. Basically my WP account is a .mac mail, while my work mail (where I get the spam and that you can find under “contact” on the blog) is the same as my domain: @duzimage.com

Only I, @duzimage get the spam, while my coworkers (also @duzimage.com) don’t get any at all!

    Thanks for the help!

    @duzimage,

What you are saying would suggest to me that the source of the spam is not WP is not WP itself – if it was WP that the SPAM would followed your .mac address.

Are you abel to activate some form of spam protection on the @duzimage.com domain. Eg: I’m with Bluehost and they provide Positini for free.

well, remember that I only changed contact address once the spam was already coming in. My provider asked me what the subject of each spam mail was and I said it’s nonsense like “xklljkjop” and they said that then it probably has nothing to do with WP. Someone must have gotten into my ip. and once in they continue spamming. They have an antispam filter and it used to work just perfectly up to a few weeks ago. If I want to next week they’ll do a server migration of all my stuff and I guess that’s the only solution. Still, before doing that I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same issue.

Sorry @duzimage that I’m not able to be of more assistance. Hope this issue gets resolved for you asap.

Do you have any mailing plugins running anywhere on your site? Or any plugins that send an email in any form? It may be that a plugin is outdated and being tweaked and used to send spam. Deactivate all of your plugins. You can just rename the plugins folder to do that. Then give it a while and see if you are still getting the spam.

If you check the full headers of some of the messages you are getting, you should be able to learn a lot more about where it is coming from.

Hi, the only mail plug in I use is Contact Form 7 and it’s updated to the latest version. It’s only for filing out a form and contact me through the website. Nothing complicated.

sender and object of the spam mails are random letters, numbers and symbols. Content are links to all sorts of things with html coding simple as <a href=……
Many e-mails seem to arrive from, what I believe to be, fake GMAIL accounts.

This does not sound like a WordPress issue, it sounds like your domain has been latched on to by a spammer to use as a return address. It’s coincedental that it happened around the time of your WP upgrade, I expect.

If so, all you can really do is wait it out, whilst checking the effectiveness of your anti spam software.
