I recently restored my site with UpdraftPlus (free version). The restore was mostly successful, however, I am experiencing several issues since restoring.

Since doing the restore, UpdraftPlus is no longer deleting old backups sets from Amazon S3. I have it set to retain 3 weekly full backups and 13 daily database backups (so I should always have 16 backups total – see snipboard.io/Hz0aRe.jpg). I had the Delete Local Backups option ENABLED before and after the restore. I unset it, saved the settings and re-enabled the setting with no change when doing new backups. There are no local backups being retained in wp-content/updraft. Here is the log from the latest backup: https://pastebin.com/FnCq1Z5s

A second problem I’m having is related to Comments. Since doing the restore, I am seeing one pending comment and five spam comments indicated even though there are actually none.

    Spam comments: https://snipboard.io/a5tGDb.jpg

    Pending comments: https://snipboard.io/wvCc0z.jpg

I have run WP-Optimize (free version) and the comment indicators still show pending and spam comments on the counters. When I do get actual pending comments and spam comments, approving or deleting them does not reset the comment counters.

Your prompt assistance in resolving these issues is appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi,

The backup log shows “0059.071 (0) These backup set(s) were imported from a remote location, so will not be counted or pruned.”, do you store backups from other websites on the same folder location?

Regarding the spam and pending comments, do you have any caching plugin installed on your site? Can you try to clear/purge cache if there is? Does that update the page?

    Regards,

Recently, I had created a staging version of my site (which now no longer exists). While the staging site was active, I accidentally had UpdraftPlus active on the staging site which did create a few backups of the staging site into the same Amazon S3 folder that my live site backs up to. This probably explains the “These backup set(s) were imported from a remote location” message you saw in the logs. In looking at the existing backups in my Amazon S3 account, I can’t tell which backups are specifically from the staging site and which are from the live site. Is there a way to identify which backups are from the staging site? I can’t tell looking at the file names. If not, would downloading then deleting all of the current backups in Amazon S3 (from the UpdraftPlus dashboard) reset the retention rules and allow proper pruning moving forward?

Regarding the spam and pending comments, I do use a caching plugin and have fully cleared the cache (both on the server and my local browser) many times with no change to the counts.

I have answered your questions but have not received a response from you in 5 days. Could you please address the issues? Thank you.

@bcrodua I was considering buying the Pro version but I may not do so after the lack of responses from Support relating to my issues experienced with the free version.

@bcrodua So I used WP-Optimize again, this time running all optimizations even though WP-Optimize wasn’t detecting any spam and trashed comments, orphaned comment meta data, or any other data that might be related to the comments. After doing this, the pending and spam comments now show zero for both types of comments which would normally be considered to be correct behavior. I just tried submitting a test comment. It went to Pending as expected but now the Pending counter still shows 0 when it should now show as 1. The same goes for Spam and Trash comments. They are no longer being counted which is the opposite behavior from what I had previously reported.

I also still need resolution on the backup retention issue.

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply.

Is there a way to identify which backups are from the staging site? I can’t tell looking at the file names.
    > The backup file name has the site name in it. The format is backup_date_time_sitename_randomcharacters_component.zip.

If not, would downloading then deleting all of the current backups in Amazon S3 (from the UpdraftPlus dashboard) reset the retention rules and allow proper pruning moving forward?
    > Yes, it is possible that the other backups has been marked as not to delete or to keep. You could move all the files to a different folder and check if it continues to be a problem.

Regarding the comment/spam issue, I would suggest submitting a separate topic here – https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-optimize/.

    Thanks,

Why should I create a new topic for WP Optimize when the comments/spam issue resulted after restoring from a backup using the free version of UpdraftPlus? I used WP Optimize afterward hoping that it might reset the comment counters in the database but it did not. It appears that you either don’t know how to fix the issue with the comment counts or maybe you are just unwilling to help me since I’m using the free version of UpdraftPlus. There has to be a solution for this.

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply.

We have recently Updated the plugin. Can try you to update to the latest version and see if you still get the same issue when restoring a backup?

If you still do get the same problem, please send us a copy of the backup log so we can investigate further on the issue.

    Thanks,

So, it turns out that the issue with the Comments counts was NOT caused by a restore using UpdraftPlus (free). The Comments counts issue is due to a plugin conflict between the NotificationX plugin and WooCommerce (the fault being with NotificationX). I have notified the plugin authors who are working on a fix for the conflict.

My sincere apologies for being in error thinking that UpdraftPlus caused this issue. I noticed the issue right after doing a restore and thought it was a database issue caused by UpdraftPlus. The issue with UpdraftPlus retaining too many backups was due to having the plugin active on a staging version of the site. Since purging the older backups, the plugin is now retaining the proper number of backups according to my settings.

Even so, I still would like to see Support respond to support requests in a more timely manner. I am hesitant to upgrade to the paid version if response to tickets is this slow.

Thanks for your time in troubleshooting the issues with me.
