• Questions about portfolio page sizes on SKETCH:

I’ve had issues with my website loading and crashing. WordPress blames my hosting service (Network Solutions), and NS denies there is a problem. I have the log from Jetpack, so I know there is a problem.

Can it be the number of images on my site? Is there a maximum number of portfolio pages and/or number of images per portfolio page recommended for SKETCH?

Also, what is an archive portfolio page. Might this be a solution for me?

    Thank you in advance,

    Alex

    Hi @sparkleballlady!

There isn’t a maximum recommendation for the number of pages when using Sketch, no – it will indeed depend on your host’s ability to support the number of images that are being loaded, as well as the speed of your individual internet connection ??

As a test, I just went through your site and opened all of the portfolio pages. I didn’t see any issues at all – even when I loaded a half dozen of them in separate tabs all at the same time!

Are you hearing reports from visitors of the site crashing? Or is it only one your computer/network?

If you are hearing the same thing from multiple sources, and are certain it is not something related to your hosting setup, you may want to check in with Jetpack support (you mentioned having a log file).

    Hi @lynneandchad,

Thanks for testing my site. I revised it yesterday and trimmed some images. Also turned all galleries into thumbnail images instead of SKETCHSQUARE format.

I know the site is going down because I have Jetpack monitoring. It went down 7 times since Jan 1, 2017. Once for up to an hour.

Last year Network Solutions (host) increased the size (? not sure right term) of my wordpress site, but the crashs still happened.

One more thought: I did a blog post with over 36 images (in 12 galleries). Would that have caused it? That post is no longer current.

    Thanks again!

    Alex

You’re welcome! (sorry for switching names, I was accidentally logged into an old account before)

I wouldn’t expect a post with 36 images to crash your server, no – but if it did, it would likely be something hosting related (which I know is frustrating, as you’re being told there isn’t a problem on that end).

It’s definitely not likely to be related to the theme you’re running. You could try switching temporarily to a different theme to confirm that and rule it out.

You could also try disabling plugins, to see if that improves things. If it does, testing the site with specific ones disabled might help identify culprit (if it were plugin related).

    Thanks, Chad.

I received an email from my host offering me 4 things it could be, and I couldn’t understand any of them. For whatever reason, the crashing has stopped (for now). The host did suggest disabling plug-ins and testing without to see if any caused a problem.

The post with 36 images had 12 galleries in rows. Is that a problem?

    Chad,

What does WP Super Cache do? I’m afraid to deactivate, since I dont know what it does. Could it be a culprit? I don’t understand what it does, but some of the terms I read sound like terms my hosting company used in their email to me.

From the WordPress/theme side, that shouldn’t be an issue at all. There could be an issue with speed when loading lots of images, but that would be more related to hosting/internet connection issues.

What does WP Super Cache do?

WP Super Cache (and other caching plugins) attempt to speed up your site by taking “snapshots” of the different pages.

Each time a page is requested by someone visiting your site, WordPress looks at the address of the requested page, and gets the necessary info from your database.

A caching plugin basically saves that result for each individual URL, so that the data doesn’t need to be looked up each time.

I’m glad the crashing has stopped! If it comes back, I’d definitely recommend disabling all plugins (including your caching plugin) to see if it gets better.

    Hi Chad,

I had 2 blackouts yesterday. I will start by disabling a few plug-ins.
Here is the course of action my hosting site recommended:

? Bad plugins (such as cache or backup plugins) that run intermittently or on random page/site loads. You may want to disable any such plugins to see if these are the cause.
? Incorrectly coded “.htaccess” rules such as mod_rewrite, user_agent, and other rules or settings in the file that may affect some visits or page loads but not others.
? Too many page requests or too long of a page load time. This can occur with many systems (especially Joomla) that are set to perform certain functions every “X” page loads.
? A custom PHP setting that is not set the way the application specifies (such as “register_globals”). You may need to change PHP settings by using a custom “php.ini” file in your “cgi-bin” folder.
If these do not correct your errors, you may want to check with the software vendor to find out why the errors are occurring specific to your installation. I apologize, but we cannot investigate the cause of intermittent internal server errors on your application.

PS. Should I move this query to another category in the forums since it is unlikely a Sketch issue. I would appreciate be steered in the right direction! Thank you.

Happy to help. I’d agree with your thoughts on moving this topic ?? I’d suggest the Fixing WordPress forum:

I hope you’re able to get it resolved soon! ??

    Chad,

Can you help me describe my problem in the proper terminology, so I can post it accurately. Thank you!

    Alex

I would use the copy you pasted in your recent reply, with the suggestions your host made.

Explain that your site is crashing randomly and you can’t tell why, but you can see the downtime in through Jetpack monitoring.

Mention that you’ve disabled all plugins and you’re still seeing the problem (if you haven’t disabled everything, including your caching plugin, and let the site run, try that first).

    Perfect.

I’m disabling plugins one by one. Caching plugin first, and site was down this morning. On to the next.

    Thanks again!

    You’re welcome!

FWIW: I might have solved my problem! Proton in Jetpack. Conflicting with WPCache. Disabled Proton and we’ll see.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for no more crashes!

If disabling Photon does the trick – and then if re-enabling it brings the crashes back – I’d definitely recommend reaching out to the Jetpack support team directly, explaining the issue and how you’ve narrowed it down:
