Top of header image getting removed

  • I would like to use the following image on a website as the header image:

    You’ll note that in the original image there is room above the subject’s head for the menu items to appear.

    However, when I upload the image and set it as the header image, it is getting cropped and as a result, the header menu text covers part of the subject’s face.

    What modifications do I need to make in order to have the full photo show up and to have the menu appear in the sky above the subject’s head?

  • Hi Natalya,

    Goran is designed for a large custom header, which is used as a background image, that works well across devices of all different sizes. Edges will get cropped so that the image looks good across different devices. Custom headers that work best in this type of theme are more flexible, decorative or abstract, so they can handle this sort of cropping.

    You have a few options for getting around this default design decision:

    • You could use some custom CSS to increase the height of the header. The ability to add custom CSS is a Custom Design option included in WordPress.com Premium or Business.
    • You could try upload the image as a logo via the Site Identity panel of the WordPress.com Customizer. The site logo feature is meant for images like yours, that include important text or can’t tolerate cropping. Goran does, however, display its logo much less prominently than its header.
    • You could consider a theme that supports the site logo feature and displays it more prominently, so your image will never be cropped or stretched. Sela is a nice example of such a theme and you could have a browse around for some more here:
