• Hi.

A previous post from me has been closed. I was asking for confirmation that the use of a particular service provider was a good idea. Sorry; I am totally new to web design and to WordPress and to this community and did not understand that my request was inappropriate.

    I’ll try to rephrase.

I want to build a website using www.ads-software.com for a group of volunteers to use to communicate and share information via a number of forums and documents.

Do you think that doing the development work on my PC rather than on a hosting site is a good idea? As I think is clear by now I know totally nothing about this and am just trying to find my way. I have just got books from the library and what I have managed to pull out of posts here and would really appreciate a bit of advice.

Thanks – and, again, apologies for my previous inappropriate post.

    Bill

Sorry, should have also said that I do understand that I would need to upload the completed work to a hosting site.

    Thanks,

    Bill

My advice is to develop your website on a hosted site, give each participant their own contributor level login.
If you want to share documents then using google docs lets you share and edit spreadsheets and text docs between users, each needs their own google login.

What localhost is really good for is as a developer it lets you edit code and css etc with a very snappy turnaround when developing themes and plugins, which is not your situation.

Thanks for your response Ross. @rossmitchell

I had considered document-sharing applications – but having forums is critical I feel. There is also a peripheral advantage of using a website in that folk unconnected with the project will be able to see some of the information and hopefully visit in person to find out more.

I thank you for your advice – in particular regarding using a host. I was trying to save the hosting fee for the time that I spend developing the site as I am going to fund this myself for the first year or so. Cheapskate!

I’ll also look more into “Contributor level login”; I was looking at “Author level”. Ignorance is not always bliss!

Thanks again Ross – appreciate it!

    Bill
