Total Upkeep timeout
-
Good morning,
I am currently in the process of updating a clients website and I am attempting to perform a manual backup of the site prior to the major changes.
However I am encountering an issue where I run the update from the “Backup Site Now” button and it starts as I would expect and then appears to “timeout” however there is no indication of an error it just stops.
Then when I check the Backups tab there is nothing there and I attempt to run the backup again and nothing happens. I am at a loss and would really appreciate some asssitance in what could be going on. below is the latest logs from todays attempts:

I have emailed the host provider to see if they notice anything from their end, but I am waiting on a call back/email back in regards to that issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello @gramthar
I’m sorry to hear about the timeout error, we’ll be happy to help you get it fixed.[2020-10-06 00:51:24 UTC] Total Upkeep version: 1.14.1
Your version of Total Upkeep is a little out of date. The first thing to try is to update the plugin to the newest version and see if the issue persists.
Another common troubleshooting step here is to change your Backup Compressor. To do this, navigate to Total Upkeep > Settings > Backup Process. If it’s available, switch to System Zip and try your backup again.
Hi @jessecowens,
I have done the upgrade and the settings change.
This did progress further but now I am getting backup files that when I open them to view contents they don’t appear to correctly reflect modifications I did. For instance the last modified date on the Index.php is from Jan 9 2012 Which is before this website was even created.I don’t have to tell you my hesitation to use this backup with dates like that haha.
Logs from today: Note it appears to have stopped at 6%

Hi @gramthar,
The backup process got to 6% and then failed without any error. Most likely the backup process was taking too long and your web host killed the process. The log that you provided generally catches all errors, except when your host “pulls the plugin” on the backup process itself.
There are still ways we can help. First though, would you be willing to do a “sanity check backup”. We’ve written about it and created a short video here (see the troubleshooting section at the bottom) – https://www.boldgrid.com/support/total-upkeep/backup-wordpress-website/
Do you have a moment to run that test and let us know if it completes successfully?
Thanks!
– BradHi @bwmarkle,

Hi @gramthar, thanks for getting back to us. I was pretty sure this sanity test was going to work, so I’m a little stumped it didn’t.
1. To confirm, this is a manual backup you’re doing, correct?
2. Can you confirm the Include and Exclude settings you’re using?
For include, you can set it to
*.txt
For exclude, you can actually leave that one blank for this test.
3. This is the full log, correct? That fact that the last line is
[2020-10-12 00:33:37 UTC]
could be a clue too, it has a timestamp but no message after it.Thanks again!
– BradHi @bwmarkle,
Manual backup – Yes.
Include – *.txt
Exclude – Empty
Yeah that is the full log.
I have also seen the server host activated the Automatic backups and this is the log from the one that ran this morninng at 0246 (I think the time between the site and the logs is off, do you know where the logs pull their time from? Hi @gramthar,
I have also seen the server host activated the Automatic backups and this is the log from the one that ran this morninng at 0246
The log file you shared, as you said, is from an automatic backup, which may be using different include / exclude settings. I’m thinking this because the log file says,
[2020-10-12 16:46:01 UTC] Finished creating list of files to include in zip. 28610 files in zip.
– I could be wrong, but I don’t think you would have 28,000+ .txt files on your account. Can you try to find the log file of the manual sanity text backup you created (or run another sanity test again and share the log for that one)? The log files are sorted – newest files at the bottom of the list – that should help find it.
I think the time between the site and the logs is off, do you know where the logs pull their time from?
The times for the log files should be UTC time.
Again, I really appreciate your help in troubleshooting!

Thanks as always!

Hi @gramthar, just touching base – how did the testing go?
Hi @bwmarkle,
Unfortunately after the Update to the plugin my WordPress site went into the critical error warning on all pages that came out with the WP update awhile ago for when something goes wrong.
I had to get the host to backup their server to a point in time before the update and luckily no one else on the server has been impacted by that update. I am still looking to see if it was the updraft update that caused it or something else. However, that was the only change made between the site working and it not.
Regards,
BenHi Ben,
Did WordPress by chance send you an email that included an error message? Or, did you see an error message anywhere else? If so, could you share please? That will for sure help with diagnosing the issue.
Thanks,
– BradHi @bwmarkle,
Unfortunately no I didn’t recieve an email, the webmaster for the website might have but he is away and I don’t have access to his email.
I will send him a message to see if he got anything. I’ll keep you posted.
Regards,
