Totally confused-MySql, installing

  • I am attempting to start a wordpress blog on my website. I know next to nothing about this sort of thing, and am totally lost.
    I am attempting to use CPanel and My Sql. I created a username and a database. I clicked the “all priviledges” box.
    According to the wordpress instructions, it says that when I go to account maintenance, there should now be some connection strings. There aren’t. I don’t know what else to do.
    Help?

  • you need 4 things.

    1. a login name for mysql, unless you created another username, its going to be the name you just used to get into cpanel (they are rarely different)

    2. the corresponding password for #1

    3. the hostname for the box thats running mysql, usually localhost works for this. If you are on godaddy, you cannot use localhost.

    4. The name of your database that you want WordPress to use. You can get the name of the databse by clicking on the mysql icon inside cpanel.

    These 4 items will be entered into your wp-config.php that you upload along with the rest of the WordPress files to your site.

    In the same cPanel, after creating the database and then the user, you then need to “add user to database”. Click on the box with those words right under the privilege selections and above “Access Hosts”. You should then see the connection strings.

    Amadeus-I added the user to the database, but it still doesn’t show up. Underneathe the privilege section, there is no box.

    Whooami-Thanks for your help. I’m so computer inept, that I really don’t understand the things you’re mentioning. I’m already in MySql, so I’m thinking I’m good on number 1 and 2.
    I don’t know what you mean in number 3.
    I’m not sure that the wp-config.php is.

    Thanks, whooami. The site is for my small business, so I don’t think I qualify for the free install.
