Tournament Points Style Website – Seeking Opinions

  • Seeking opinions on the best way to approach a tournament style website where users earn points through participating, earn extra points for coming in 1-2-3 places and other variables of rankings.

    Something like

    I know some people offer pre-built templates and that there are plugins like MyCred available for point systems but I figured, why not ask the WP experts over here and see if I caught someone able to provide better advice?

    Any templates or ideas of approach that you wouldn’t mind sharing, please?

    I’m sorry no one else has responded to your topic. In one sense, you really only have two choices. One is to find a plugin or group of plugins that offer the functionality you desire. The other is to develop a custom site that does everything you need. Actually, there’s a third choice — a combination of both. Use plugins where you can and fill in with custom work.

    The problem with plugins is you need to conform to how they do things and some plugins offer much more than you really need, contributing to code bloat. The problem with custom code is you need coding skills or need to hire someone who does. Custom code takes time to develop. Plugins are a download away. Custom code tends to not be well tested, so can be rather buggy. Such bugs tend to be easier to fix than plugin bugs. Plugin bugs are less likely, but still possible. They tend to be harder to fix.
