• Using the redirection plugin I create a simple redirect that links to a PDF file in the media uploads. I’ve added UTM parameters for tracking but when I look in GA4 and sort by source/medium I can’t find any activity. There should be at least some activity from testing the redirect links but I don’t see anything. Can someone please help me understand what I am doing wrong. I want to know if these redirects that I am setting up are being used and if so how often.

    ^/locations/erik-mouse/line-card

    redirects to

    /wp-content/uploads/Erik-Mouse.pdf?utm_medium=redirect&utm_source=line-card

AFAIK you cannot directly track file downloads because you cannot contain GTM script within a media file. It needs to be within a web page context. Instead of directly redirecting, allow the page containing GTM script to load. After it loads and executes GTM script, only then can you redirect to the PDF file. This is best done via JavaScript which waits for the page to finish loading before redirecting.
