• I’m sure all of my questions have been answered many times, but when I search and read I still don’t come away with a firm grasp of how to use a trackback.
I am using WP 2.04 on BlueHost.

1)Do I need any plugins to use trackback?
    2) If I find a post on “Bob’s Blog” and I comment on it on my blog, how does trackback come into play? Do I need to quote from Bob’s Blog or can I just make my comment and refer to Bob’s?
    3) If I click “trackback”, what exactly happens? Does Bob get my post or a part of it?
    4) Am I notified that Bob has published my comment or do I need to read Bob’s Blog to find out?

OR, as it appears to me, do I need to use the comment feature on my blog to invoke trackback? The option to click it only appears in the “comment” form.

    Thanks.

  • I guess you should start doing some reading:

I have read the very item you suggest — several times, but unfortunately (call me a slow learner) it doesn’t answer all the questions I included in my post.
It suggests that a trackback might include only a portion of my comment, or the whole comment, but can I control that?
And it suggests that pingback might be better, but maybe not.
And most of all my question of when I post on my own blog — either including a quote from “Bob’s Blog” or only a reference,(I’ve now found the option to send trackback)should I use the url of the Blog or the specific post on the blog.
It is GOOD ADVICE to suggest we questioners do some reading before asking questions, but sometimes even after reading, there are questions.
    Thanks.

    1. Trackbacks (TB)
You write a post. Below the text input area there is a special field for TB.
Put there the TB URL of jimmy’s blogpost. Publish.
If the TBs are enabled on jimmy’s blog, your TB will show up among the comments

1a. If your blog allows TB/pings – if jimmy does the same, the TB will show up among your comments.

    Your control is limited to:
    – allow them
    – not allow them

    2. Pingback. (Pb)
You write a post. You include the URL of jimmy’s posts (WARNING; not the TB URL!) as a link in your posts.
On jimmy’s blog it will show up among the comments as a pingback.

2b. Same if jimmy does the same.

Control: as above – to receive or not.

Thank you very much. I wish I had read your “TestTrack” readme. If I had, I’d not have asked the question.
I may ask another if I can’t locate the toggle for “allow them or not allow them.”

    1. It’s not mine. Podz is hosting that test site. Thank him!

@jimsolt: I agree, the trackbacks and pingbacks are very well documented, but a simple “here’s-how-you-do-it checklist” is not easily found on the Codex.

Podz’s WordPress Guides fill in a much needed gap.
