• I can’t seem to get trackbacks going on my blog (www.SoCalLawBlog.com). WordPress does not: a) autodiscover the URLs to track back and b) even when I manually paste the correct URL to track back into the appropriate post field, no dice.

I read over the suggestions in this post here regarding replacing the “functions.php” file.

    Any other ideas out there?

  • I am having the same problem. I have tried pingbacks and trackbacks to my own site and others with no luck. Also tried replacing functions.php. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I downloaded and installed WordPress 1.5 on March 8, 2005.

Ditto. I thought it was something I did, but know I’m getting a feeling that it isn’t.

I have been able to fix the problem of receiving trackbacks and pingbacks. I was using a plugin to separate TB/PB from comments. Apparently the manner of handling TB PB must have changed since the plugin so I had to modify accordingly…

HOWEVER, I still cannot send TB or PB. I have tested against my own site and various other sites. The functions.php that has been suggested is identical to the file that I currently have (must have been updated before i upgraded to 1.5)

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I just checked on the IRC #wordpress and the folks there, who seem to be some of the most knowledgable around (or “think they are” ?? hee hee ) say that this is a known bug and something that is being worked on.

I’d like them to be wrong, but so far, from everything I see, it works, doesn’t work, works, and doesn’t work, but mostly doesn’t work.

Please someone jump in and tell me I’m wrong on this.

Is the general problem sending and/or receiving trackbacks?? With respect to sending, why is it that most people can send and I can’t? I am willing to believe it is something I screwed up ?? I don’t see how it could be a bug if most people have it working right off the bat. I was able to address the incoming problem because it was something I overlooked while setting up my plugins… Lorelle, are you able to receive or send trackbacks or are they completely not working??

I don’t know how to send, as this technique is new to me, but in 1.2, if I posted a link to another article on my site within WordPress, it would be listed in the comments as a trackback. I now have TONS of links within links of my all WordPress site under 1.5 and nary a ping, track, or back has shown up. I just thought that was automatic.

I replaced the functions.php and it still doesn’t “do” anything, and the folks on the ICQ tell me it’s a known bug, but why can some have it working and some not? I don’t know, but I’m going to look into this more…as soon as I know what I’m talking about!

I don’t actually use either pings or tracks – my blog is my blatherskite and I don’t necessarily want others seeing it etc…. it’s while not locked-down private, still pretty much so…. It acts as my “blow off steam” spot, so my husband doesn’t have to listen to me.

However, without any intervention from me, a couple of sites to which I’ve linked to thank for plugins or other software have actually shown trackbacks with a portion of the post in which I linked them up.

I honestly can’t help with this problem y’all are having, because I didn’t DO anything to “make it happen”. I subsequently disabled anywhere I thought such things might occur, because that’s not what I want (and is probably why, along with an arsenal of about 6 plugins, I have no spam….)

I cannot for the life of me get the trackback function to work either. This is a major bug that needs to get addressed. Why is it taking so long?

Without trackbacks being enabled it is like all WordPress users remain silent on the net.

Can someone please address this issue and fix the errors? Whenever I try to trackback the submission just hangs ay “post.php” and does not go anywhere. The article is added to my blog but the trackbacks do not go to any of the site(s) I trackback to.

Is there a step-by-step solution to this problem. I tried the new functions.php file and it’s a no go for me as well. All it allowed me to get was trackbacks from my own blog itself.

    This is really annoying.

    Me too. https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic.php?id=30717

If it helps. I have figured out how to receive a trackback to my site. But I have to manually add “/trackback/” to the end of my permalink for it to work from the test site. The correct trackback address is displayed only when I hover over my trackback link. But clicking on the link brings me to the regular permalink address.

    I also cannot send trackbacks.

    Can anyone fix this?

What you are reporting about being taken to the permalink address is (i think) the way it’s supposed to work.

But if I take the permalink address and add “/trackback/” to the end , and place that in the trackback spot at the test site, it comes through as a trackback, not a pingback.

    permalink address: domain.com/index.php/2005/04/12/post name/
    trackback address: domain.com/index.php/2005/04/12/post name/trackback/

I’m new to this, so maybe I am misunderstanding the purpose, but I thought they were different.

The way that the notification email, and how they were listed in the comments was different as well.

Not sure if I’m confused about what you’re saying, but when you click on a trackback link in a regular browser I believe it redirects to the permalink address because (i assume) of the absence of variables that are recognized as proper trackback info.

For example, when the post hits the trackback site it passes info about your site to the site that you are tracking back to.

If you are having problems sending or receiving a trackback that’s certainly possible but I don’t think the fact that your browser doesn’t “go to” the /trackback page is part of it.

Again I am pretty much speculating, but maybe this will help you in trying to figure out what’s wrong.

I have been reading this thread with extreme interest because, well, I’m having the same issue. But now I have more questions….

When you are getting ready to publish a post, what exactly are you supposed to put in the “Send trackbacks to:” box? Is that where you put the URL of the site you are mentioning in your post? Or are you putting the URL of your own site in there? I thought it all made sense and I knew what I was doing….but now perhaps I’m just over-thinking this whole darn thing. Please help! Thanks! ??

I am pretty sure you put any sites that you mentioned or that are relevant, BUT by placing a link to the site within your post it should also send a “pingback” I guess the trackback is if you don’t place a link, or don’t ping, or want to do both???

I think this may help. Go to my site. Move your cursor over the trackback part and look art the address you see if your browser has a status bar.

It will be the permalink plus “/trackback/

But if you actually click on that trackback link, you go only to the premalink address.

I have found you have to have the “/trackback/” there in order for the test site to send the trackback.

I have a friend using powerblogs. When you click on his trackback link, it pulls up a plain text page displaying the trackback address.

I assume that is how it is supposed to work. I have tried doing trackbacks to his site, and none have worked yet.
